My wife and I visited the Hana Lava Tubes during a visit to the Hawaiian Islands.
The entry fee is $15 pp. After a short introduction by John, we were issued with torches and made our way down into the tube. Torches are essential.
There were numerous information plaques en route explaining what we were seeing.
We found it interesting and informative.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in the Hana area.

If you’re driving the Road to Hana, you will find many neat roadside attractions. One that my husband and I found to be particularly cool was the lava tubes. Definitely check this out while you are there! There is a fee of around $15/person and that includes your flashlight rental, you’ll want a good one, trust us, it gets dark! Once we were in the tube we turned our flashlights out to see exactly how pitch black it is.
They are approximately 960 years old and were formed as a result of molten lava spilling from underground and flowing towards the ocean. Lots of informative signs along the way. Its other-worldly feel will make you glad you stopped. It’s really cool, literally! The underground tubes stay anywhere between 66 and 72 degrees F which can be a nice break from that Hawaiian heat!
There is also a fall out shelter that is stocked with enough supplies to feed 15 people for 6 weeks! Wear decent shoes with a good tread because the cave floors are cinder-like and uneven. Definitely not wheelchair accessible.

For $15 you get a flashlight and access to lava tubes. It was DARK- absolutely no light in there other than your flashlight.
It's a self guided tour, where you can read signs that explain what you are seeing and with facts about the tubes.
We stopped here on our journey to Hana. I'm not sure I would spend the time to stop here again, but my family did enjoy it!

My Husband and I stopped here along the Road to Hana Drive and we were glad we did. I've been in a few caves but these Lava tubes are different and so incredible. We saw a bunch of blind crickets running around. But never spotted the worms. Definitely worth stopping for.

This was a neat little stop on the road to Hana that my wife and daughters (4 and 7) really enjoyed. You would never know the lava tubes were here unless you had a guide or looked on Trip Advisor. Just a tiny hole by the road that you can squeeze through. But it does open up very fast and extends out quite a ways. Fun for everyone, just make sure not to bump your head!

We decided on a whim to pull in after a long day of driving the RTH. We were staying in Hana for the night so no need to turn around and rush back. The lava tubes were very interesting and unique. Everyone was happy we made the stop! Took about 30 min to walk through. Also a maze here but we didn’t stay for that.

The Hana Lava Tubes was absolutely the best stop on the Road to Hana. This is a beautifully preserved natural attraction. No frills and as nature made it is what this is about. My family and I felt it was the highlight of the whole Hana drive. I sat and talked with the owner for awhile as my family did the "maze". He is a very interesting man who has created something very special. I have visited several caverns and caves across the United States and I have to say that this is second to nothing. It was refreshing to find something that lacked all the touristy crap. I feel it is a must see stop.

This is a nice place for a walk through the lava tube. After driving for a long time the break was welcome. They give you a flashlight as you enter so you can make your way to the end of the trail. Unfortunately, the trail does not go all the way to the ocean, which would have been spectacular.

I might have given this 5 stars if I had only visited Maui, but since I have the lava tubes on the Big Island to compare them too, I must write my review as such.
These are neat and some go straight to the water, but they are smaller and often the areas around them are collapsed so they are not as well preserved as the "younger" Big Island ones.
Still, if you are at the black sand beach there is a neat one right on the beach that leads to the water.

This provided a nice little place to stretch your legs while driving the Road to Hana. It was a self-guided tour and you're given flashlights so you can find your way through. It was definitely a neat experience to go inside a massive lava tube!

Would someone who is claustrophobic have a problem going through the tubes?
Written November 15, 2017
The tube is spacious and has no narrow areas, so it should not be a problem... However, most of the tube is dark and can seem smaller than it is...
Written November 16, 2017
Yes it's $15, you get torches to go down into the tunnels.
