More
NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

The gardens are just west of Poipu. The location was one of many in Kauai that was used in the filming of Jurassic Park. I recommend the guided tour...interesting and informative. If you are into tropical gardens this is a must.

We took the combo Allerton and McBride tours with Serena as our tourguide. She was friendly and informative. She has lived here her entire life and is a descendent back multiple generations, so she knew her stuff! Lots of native and non-native plants and flowers....More

We took the Discovery Combination Tour with David Dickinson, who was extremely knowledgeable of everything and a lot of fun to hang with. Our tour included the highlights from both McBryde and Allerton gardens. Note: accessing the gardens is not possible without taking a tour...More

We went on a tour and really enjoyed learning about the plants and how they are trying to prevent some plants from becoming extinct. However I would not recommend this tour for children.

Our family took the double garden tour, and we were fortunate to have Michael, a former park ranger, as our knowledgeable guide. We learned island history, flora and fauna, what is endangered and how the garden is trying to reverse that trend. We saw beauty,...More

We loved our visit to the botanical gardens. We chose the guided tour that takes you to both Allerton and McBryde gardens. Our guide, Tanji, was amazing and so knowledgeable. I loved having a guide for the information that they provided, but would have loved...More

Fabulous and informative 2 1/2 tour of these remarkable South Shore botanical gardens-stupendously enthusiastic, knowledgeable and humorous guide Stephen Tanji. Also saw a whale breech and some nearly extinct plants, carefully nurtured in their extraordinary nursery. Lush moss, fruit trees, flowering tropical plants and orchids...More

Lots of really nice plants, took a day here to just walk around and take photos of the interesting plants. I would recommend it but be warned that it is a bit pricey for what it is.

Went to McBride this afternoon on the self-guided tour. Underwhelming. Maybe other months are better but though it was a pleasant walk, it certainly had little wow. Almost no flowers and lots of plants were pretty bare. I feel like taking the $60 fee for...More

We were driven on a bus to the top of the garden and were escorted by the bus driver. She knew very little about the plants and the few times she attempted, I had to correct her. Few plants were labeled. The garden was not...More

I believe the McBryde Gardens tour is more about the plants and a shorter tour. The midday Allerton Gardens tour takes well over two hours. Besides hearing about the plants you hear a lot of wonderful stories about the site... More
