We booked a 6 hour private fishing tour for 9 inexperienced anglers (ages 9 to 57) and had an amazing time. Captain Scott runs a ship shape boat exactly as the website says he will and there are no surprises. Yes Capt Scott will be up on the bridge whenever the boat is moving (that’s where he drives the boat from) but he is more than willing to talk to you if you want to go up there. He is constantly trying to find fish for you to catch and doesn’t hesitate to have Cody (his deckhand) change reels depending on what he thinks will help you accomplish that feat. Cody is very personable, seems to do a great job and doesn’t hesitate to answer any of your questions. Despite having 5 of the 9 of us get seasick we managed to do quite well in the catching fish department. All 7 of us who actually felt well enough to fish got to catch one. We caught a few Skipjack and Ahi including a really nice sized Ahi. Capt Scott sent us home with the big Ahi and a Skipjack for a couple nights worth of meals. There was plenty of room on the Lahela for our party of 9. I have to laugh at the negative reviews because if you read the FAQs you will realize that the people who are upset is because Capt Scott actually does what he says that he will do. If you read the FAQs and think you can’t handle his answers then Lahela Sportfishing isn’t for you but if you want to have a great day fishing I totally recommend it.

Captain Scott runs a great boat. My 12 year old son and I signed up for the 4 hour reef fish. We caught lots of fish and had a great time. Cody was super helpful and fun to fish with. Everything on the boat is top notch. Would recommend to anyone looking to get out on the water. Great father/son memories.

I did a 4 hr. private charter. Had a great time fishing with Capt Scott and his deckhand (son) Cody. Caught a total of 8 keeper fish and we had about 6 throwbacks. Plenty of fishing action in a short 4 hr. trip. The boat “Lahela” is in good shape and provides a very comfortable fishing platform, when I noticed other boats out on the water, I was glad to be on the “Lahela”. Crew was very friendly and worked hard at their job. They were able to book me at the last minute via a phone call. If or when I get back to Kauai, I’ll be fishing with them again. Only complaint is—they didn’t have a t-shirt or cap I could purchase. LOL!!! again, great time, great boat, great fishing experience. I was by myself, but would’ve felt comfortable on that boat with up to 4 or 5 other folks.

First of all I want to say that Scott, our captain, was very professional and attentive to our needs. His helper, Rob, was a hard working guy and so nice to us. We caught 18 Skip Jack Tuna and will be bringing it home.. we had fun and loved being on the water. I would recommend him highly.

Let me begin by saying, we did catch a good amount of Mahi and some nice-sized Tuna. Captain Scott does know where and how to catch fish. However, that being said, he was the rudest captain I have ever met. Started the day in the rain, which was fine (it’s always raining in Kauai), except for the fact that he kicked my family and I out of the cabin and onto the open deck so that HE could stand inside the cabin to give instructions while we stood in the rain. He was also very weird about people in his cabin overall. The water was very choppy that day and I got sick after a while. I asked if I could lay down in the cabin and he told me I was not allowed in his cabin if was sick, even when I offered to bring a bucket with me just in case. So I ended up laying down on the hard open deck floor because I felt so terrible and he wouldn’t let me lay down on the couch (which was achingly uncomfortable by the way). My family and boyfriend were furious. As I mentioned earlier, we did catch about a dozen Mahi and two good-sized tuna (probably 100-130lbs). When the two members of our family caught the tuna, he did take photos right after we got them in the boat with the anglers, but refused to let us take any other photos with them once we got back to the dock. This was irritating because, while we understand the fish are heavy, we offered to take them out for them (we had four big guys with us) and because everyone else wanted pictures with them too, since you don’t catch fish like that everyday. He refused to let us take those photos, and that just was just ridiculous- WE paid HIM to provide us with this experience, WE caught the fish, and he got to keep it. Yup, although we got some of the other fish we caught, he didn’t let us take any of these two larger tuna. Again, we were furious, but he stayed stubborn. And to top it all off, he was unnecessarily punitive and mean to his deckhand- who was very nice and knowledgeable by the way. He yelled at him the whole trip, at one point even complaining that he didn’t know what he was going (he did, he was just having a hard time juggling everything at the time since the captain refused to help him). This captain ruined this once in a lifetime experience and I will NEVER fish with him again.

Response from Scott A, Owner at Lahela Sportfishing

Aloha faziojfjf, First let me say i'm sorry I didn't exceed your exception's as your Captain. You were part of a private charter, of 7 passengers. Everyone seemed to be happy except you which being seasick is understandable. In the morning your Captain (Me) gave everyone a pre-departure briefing. Once underway your deckhand/crew takes over covering the safety gear, seasickness, rest room and finally the fishing or tackle that we will be using that day. Some people listen and take it in and some don't. Our policy on seasickness is you stay outside in the fresh air. I told everyone in the morning that I would be operating the boat from the top flybridge and would not be coming down unless the boat is stopped, and or if the crew needed my help and that you were always welcome to join me on the bridge. And if you had any questions to just let me or Austin know and I would be happy to come down and talk with you. We were fishing an area that we knew had some kind of floating debris but had no idea where it was located. About an hour later, once the sun was higher up I located it. If we had run over that debris, we could have been towed in or worse yet possibly sunk 8 miles offshore. As for me yelling at my crew. Austin is hard of hearing from his primary job as a sandblaster sandblasting. Your comment of me being rude. I'm not rude however I do expect all my crew members to bring there A game each and every day. As for the fish, your group elected to not have any fish processed. So we cut, cleaned and gave you fish as outlined on our catch policy. This information is located on our website www.sportfishkauai.com F.A.Q Page. And posted on our boat and sign in sheet when you signed in. Also, I emailed the person who made this reservation with a request to be sure everyone going on this trip reads our F.A.Q. page. Mahalo, Captain Scott 808-635-4020
