Great time!

Very entertaining, talented performers. I enjoyed the food and vendors as well. It was a long event, especially for younger kids, but my 4 year old really enjoyed the show.

2nd time and LOVED it again!
Jun 2021 • Family
We took our kids here 6 years ago when they were just 9 and 12. So now that we are back and they are older, we definitely wanted to come again and we’re so grateful they were back open here as COVID is winding down. The big draw for us to return was the shuttle ride you can purchase to and from your resort so you don’t have to drive or park (and our resort is almost an hour away). But we will come back in the future for the show, food and great hospitality!

TIP: get the family picture done before you get seated. It might seem corny but it’s actually a great souvenir and two poses is only $26 in a nice cardboard frame, totally worth it! They have them displayed for purchase by 7:00 which is BEFORE the show, so if you purchase them right after you finish eating, you’ll avoid the crowds.

When we were first arrived we were seated at a large table on the very edge of the audience (so quite far from the stage) and sitting in the hot sun. We sat down while the teens scrambled off to do some souvenir shopping at their outdoor marketplace with lots of handmade goods and excellent island photography (of which I bought some!). I went to get my husband and I mai tais at the open bar. They were actually very good which made us happy! You can only carry one drink at a time, and my husband has mobility issues, so they set his aside and I just had to run back and get it. As we were sitting there wishing we were in shade and closer to the stage, a nice employee (dinner captain Mark), came up to us and asked if we’d like to move out of the sun (on the shuttle you arrive nice and early which means more Mai tais and more time for shopping!). It’s like he was reading our minds! He moved us closer to the restrooms and buffet line so it would be easier for my husband who is handicapped. But this table also happened to have an excellent view of the stage (and closer) and very close to the bar! We were thrilled and I know our show experience was also much better because of Mark’s thoughtful and observant actions. My teens were taking short video snippets and posting on social media, plus we just all had a fabulous view, so we were very happy. I later sought him out and gave him a tip for his kindness which I know he wasn’t expecting.

A note on tipping: PLEASE BRING CASH WITH YOU!!! The service industry here on Kauai still greatly depends on tipping, so please bring some cash. I have no doubt they pay these folks well (at least I hope so), but there are quite a few people you should be tipping from our shuttle driver, to the server who brings your food and clears your plates to the bartenders pouring your open bar drinks. I did not see nearly the amount of tips in the bartenders tip jar as I expected for a crowd of over 200 people.
The other people on our shuttle did not tip our nice driver Kats, and that really annoyed me. These people all work very hard, show a little appreciation please.

I do not know if you can pay for premium seating but once you are there, if you aren’t very close, it never hurts to NICELY ask an employee if there are any available tables closer or with a better view. If you have a handicap person in your group, you can probably request this ahead of time when you make the reservation. Just call after you purchase your tickets (or before) and see if they can help you. Their phone customer service is very good, I had to call a couple of times.

The food: dinner was Buffett style which I wasn’t expecting during a pandemic, but I was actually happy about this. I’m plant based and there were plenty of non-meat options to fill me up. Plus, the food was excellent!!! I don’t know if they have improved their food quality or if was always this good, but I’m surprised in some older reviews to read complaints about the food. This was not our experience and I wish I could have gone back for more macaroni salad, it was amazing…the best I’ve ever had! They served us the salad and dessert but the main course was Buffett. They excuse the outer tables first and move inward, so we were some of the first to be served since our new table was closer but still an outer table. The coffee to go with dessert was REALLY good, so don’t miss it! They had decaf too which I appreciated.

The performers and dancers are absolutely incredible in this show! The level of talent and athleticism demonstrated by all the performers was just impressive and mesmerizing to watch. TIP: read the story in the program BEFORE the show starts. You will understand better the flow of the story told by each part of the overall show. I unfortunately didn’t do this and so was trying to read the program during the show with light from my phone which wasn’t easy. The print is quite small, so if you have “old eyes”, bring a magnifying glass or strip.
If you have children in your group, try and bring them up to speed on the story ahead of time so they have a sense of what they are seeing. It will give much more meaning to your whole experience if you do this.

We thought we recognized the old man main character from 6 years ago and we later found out it was the same guy!! He is amazing, such a great singer and performer and he couldn’t look more the part if he tried. We were really excited to see him again, I remembered him as being amazing last time too. Our teenagers were mesmerized the whole time but especially liked the fire dance segment (of course!). The costumes are beautiful (and of course the people are too…wow!) and I especially liked the dancer who was portraying “the ocean”. Such a cool concept and the ocean dancer does an amazing job with this part. Wow! ALL the dancers were so good, too many details I’d love to mention, so you’ll just have to see it for yourself!

The sound system is great for the music, sounds and even singing, but I do admit it can be challenging to understand what the actors are actually saying. Another reason why reading the program before the show starts. If you know the outline of the story ahead of time, it’s not as important to try and hear their every word.

EVERY employee we encountered was really hospitable, friendly and kind. I just can’t say enough about the employees, I was very impressed. They made us feel welcomed and appreciated and wanted. I know some tourists can act quite ugly, so for them to consistently show kindness and hospitality says a lot about their character but also management because it all starts from the top. Having personal experience with Mark, a dinner captain, I know that management values the good treatment of the guests and it shows!

If you are considering a luau event while on Kauai, I can’t recommend Luau Kalamaku enough. We had SUCH a great time, it was worth every Penny!

Disappointed and can’t fill the gap…
May 2021 • Family
So our family actually didn’t get to experience this Luau.

The reason I am writing this review is due to the extremely poor communication we experienced. I booked this luau on 3/31, nearly two months prior to the date. I got a call barely 24 hours prior (on 5/20) telling me that they had to cancel because they weren’t allowed to operate for the month of May.

Now I ABSOLUTELY understand that the Covid restrictions change all the time and I completely do not fault this company for that, however if they knew they they couldn’t open for May, why on earth did they wait until the day before we were due, to tell us that for a May 21 show time??

This was supposed to be one the the main events for my party of 8 on this trip. So now we can’t get a booking anywhere else because everything is booked out until mid July.

We will find some amazing beach and have fun, but this was extremely disappointing to miss out on such an iconic Hawaiian experience.

Amazing show
This luau was amazing. I enjoyed the show because it covered a lot of hawaiian legends and lore. The food was so good! The only downside was that when our section was released to the buffet line many of the food items were needing to be restocked however the wait staff were rapidly trying to fill the food items. But I didn’t get to try all food items. The bar drinks were included with the meal. Would definitely recommend this luau for those visiting the island.

Great and Exciting Show and a bit of Hawaiian Folklore
Dec 2019
Went to the plantation grounds for a train ride, craft display, buffer dinner, and a exciting flaming torch show. The show presents a story of a father and his daughter. It is a Hawaiian story line displayed through about 12 vignettes with beautiful costumes, people, music, and dance. We enjoyed the show and food. Just watch the torches!

Amazing Show
Mar 2020
I was very skeptical of this and cautioned by other reviewers, however, I had a fantastic time. As others have noted, do NOT come anticipating a gourmet meal. This is a buffet and family styled service. Food was served on very old (and probably not hygienic) wooden plates. I actually thought the pork was quite tasty but that was about it. Drinks were flowing and strong! Unlike another review, they did not cut off the bar prior to the show starting. We had gold seating and were in an excellent position to see the show- front row when we turned our seats to the stage, which we did. I can see how those that did not pay for gold seating may not have a great view of the stage. The story was great, the music and the costumes were incredible. I don't see this as anything close to Cirque du Soleil and just some great local talent. While this is not the luau I had in my head (on the beach, watching the smoke rise from the sand, hula dancing, etc.) this was definitely a show worth seeing. The plantation was nice and they had local artists and crafts prior to the show.

Taste of Hawaii
Nov 2019
The buffet at the luau was abundant and very good. My favorites were the fresh caught fish cooked coconut milk and spinach, the poi was good and the desserts were yummy. Mixed drinks are included and strong so, make sure to try a couple of their tropical concoctions!

Family Luau
Nov 2019
Wonderful show and music. I'm a former Polynesian dancer so, my expectations were high. The show exceeded my expectations. A great family and celebration event. The food was very good and the drinks were strong.
I also liked the boutique with local artisans they had before the show.

What a performance!
Mar 2020 • Couples
Never having been to a luau before I have nothing to compare this too. But we thought it was amazing. The athleticism, the choreography and the story telling was fabulous. The buffet was fresh with nice choices, even vegetarian. The cocktail hour gave us a chance to peruse many of the local Crafters creations. Would definitely go again.
