About Ancient Kauai Excursions
Join us as we journey through time, from Ice Ages, to the arrival of the Polynesians, to the historic Koloa sugar mill to today. We visit ancient sites where native Hawaiians lived, worked and played, including the Makauwahi Cave Reserve, one of the largest and most impressive sinkholes known in all the Hawaiian Islands. Professional archeologists lead all tours. Tour guides are also knowledgeable about native plants and animals, geology and local conservation projects. Learn about traditional Hawaiian farming techniques (taro loʻi), feel the soft sands of ancient dunes, and visit Kauai’s only tortoise sanctuary. December through April, humpback whales breaching and blowing are a common site from vistas along the tour! The tour also includes opportunities to see rare and endangered bird species, such as the Hawaiian black-necked stilt (aeʻo) in the loʻi. Join us for a magical excursion in an incredibly beautiful part of the Garden Island.

While visiting Kauai in 2018, we experienced the Ancient Kauai Excursions. The tour leader was Linz Armstrong, an archaeologist who actually worked on a dig in Kauai when he was in college. (now part of the tour) His knowledge and presentation was dynamic! There are 6 or 8 people on the tour, and they pick up participants at different points. We're planning another trip to Kauai in 2020, and repeating this tour is on the top of our list! Lots of things to see and experience on Kauai - but this one is a must experience!!.

This tour provided a wealth of interesting information on the history of Kauai, covering the geology, plant and animal life as well as the people and culture of Kauai. Linz was our tour guide and he provided an extremely interesing and knowledgeable commentary. The tour took us to a part of the island that most people do not get to see, and us a new insight and respect into the culture of the people of Kauai.

This tour was the highlight of our visit to Kauai. Our guide, Linz, is an anthropologist, osteologist, and paleoecologist by training. He spoke with deep knowledge and enthusiasm about Kauai's prehistory and more recent history. While his entire tour was interesting, we found the cave and the reserve particularly fascinating. Linz skillfully distilled complex concepts so that they were accessible to the average layperson. His vivid descriptions made prehistory come alive. He also provided a variety of local snacks. Throughout the tour, Linz impressed us with his good humor, thoughtfulness, and sincerity. Highly recommend.

This was wonderful for the information on island archaeology, history and culture. There is very little walking, a fun very short half minute crawl thru a cave opening and a lot of standing. Short van ride to 3 sites of interest . Viewing 2 relatively shallow caves in one spot .Great picnic lunch outside the cave. Visit a small farming area to meet turtles and see traditional style of Hawaiian farming. Our guide was excellent, quite knowledgeable, funny, friendly and eager for questions. It is like a semesters worth of island creation growth culture compressed into an easy to understand and follow manner. This is not a nature walk or hike. This is very different from most tours on the island - very educational but equally wonderful way to spend 4hours. This is for older teens thru seniors, young children would be bored standing around for this.

We loved this tour and learned so much. Lenz was our guide. He was very knowledgeable and made the tour interesting as well as informative. I had trouble getting into the cave. It is about 3-3 1/2 foot opening. I have metal knees and couldn’t quite get low enough to get in. My husband and daughter did. However, you get to se part of the inside of the cave from above so I didn’t miss a lot. The walking parts of the tour wee relatively easy. Would recommend
