Have you ever been so fortunate as to have visited a someone in a different city and have that person devote their entire day to taking you to all the best places around town? Normally, this would fall into the category of a close friend or relative. However, my husband and I came to Kauai not knowing another single soul, and luckily, we found Jay who became that amazing person for us. For years, I was an avid Yelper, but I got burnt out and haven't reviewed much since. That being said, I haven't written a single thing on TripAdvisor...until now. Because my phenomenal experience with Jay warrants a review. I was initially hesitant to inquire about a private tour, but the cost was actually pretty reasonable considering everything that you get. We drove around Maui on our own, but Kauai is notorious for rainfall, flash flooding, and landslides. In fact, a landslide ended up happening while we were there! We wanted to adventure and make the most out of our short time in Kauai, but we wanted to do it safely with someone experienced and knowledgeable of the land. In all honesty, Jay lived up to his reviews and more. He is kind, funny, incredibly informed, a proponent of learning and education, and respectful of people, animals, and the earth. While touring around Kauai, we chatted our couple of days away like old friends. We learned so much from Jay, and I haven't met a single person in all of my travels who so openly and thoughtfully answered my multitude of questions pertaining to anything and everything. My husband and I both thoroughly appreciated the fact that Jay always gave us options throughout our day. He emphasized that this was *our* tour, and we could do anything we wanted or skip anything we weren't interested in. As long as we did our part to communicate, Jay always happily obliged. The cherry on top was when Jay went above and beyond his tour guide duties to graciously offer us his bathroom and shower in his own home when he found out we were planning on ending our final day with paying for YMCA facilities to shower right before our flight home that night. Thank you so much again for the hospitality and fun-filled days, Jay!

This was our first time in Kauai so my husband decided to book a guided hike with Tread Lightly. He spoke to Jay a few times prior to our arrival and explained what we were looking to do. Jay did not disappoint!! Our 4.5 mile moderate hike took us to high places, beaches, caves, historical areas, even a turtle farm and of course, the most amazing views!!!! Jay shared so much of his knowledge about the area. We learned a lot from him. Along the hike, Jay took family photos and scenic shots and emailed them to us when the day was over. Memories we will have forever! He picked us up at our hotel, provided us with snacks, water and a driving tour of the town. He also gave us a booklet with recommendations for where to go and what to eat. We highly recommend Jay and Tread Lightly. We talked about the experience for days afterward and we shared our photos with everyone. It was the highlight of our trip! Jay is kind, knowledgeable and patient. We will definitely reach out to him again if we ever visit have to opportunity to visit this beautiful island again.

We booked two days with Jay! This was not our first time to Kauai, but we wanted to get to know the island more, it's people and places better. Jay was the perfect way to do this. While he drives you around he island he tells you about the current happenings on the island, the hidden gem places to go explore and relax like a kama’aina (local). We have two kids 10 & 14 and we wanted them to experience Kauai and learn to love it like my wife and I do.Jay made sure they were having fun and showed us places of interest for the kids and for us adults! Beware Jay has some great corny jokes that will keep you laughing :). He did point out some movie star or celebrity homes but that was in no way his focus of the tour. It was merely in general conversation as we past the locations. The real focus was on the island, the people and the history. I loved Jay telling my family about the stories of the island and historical happenings that I never would have heard or read about on my own. It gave me and my family a whole new appreciation for the island, it's people and the culture. It's been over a week since we left the island and we are still talking about the trip, my kids loved spending time with Jay. We will be back and yes we will most definitely be spending more time with Jay. Mahalo Jay for making our trip unforgetable! Aloha!

Ted and his lovely family were a joy to share Kauai with. Although, I must say...corny? Those have been great jokes for at least 60 years! I see also I fell into the Anini thing, where I point out the house from "Honeymoon in Vegas"...100 parachuting Elvis impersonators over Las Vegas at night is a pretty good scene. They just like to make a lot of movies on Kauai, go figure. We had a great time, thank you so very very much. I look forward to seeing you again sometime. aloha, Jay

Jay is a wonderful and knowledgeable guide. The tour took us by many locations where Jay pointed out many attractions we should return to visit. Was a great intro to the island attractions, but could definitely have done without the tour if stars homes bit (no interest to us). Would have preferred stopping at a few sites such as the Hindu monastery for a quick look. Would have gladly paid the admission. All in all a nice tour, just make sure you leave time in your vacation plans to return to see the sites pointed out on the tour.

Aloha Cassbaby, I am glad that overall you had a good time and I am especially glad you mentioned the things you would have liked to change. Constructive criticism is really helpful. About the "Movie star" homes tour, I guess I have had so many people ask me where movies are shot and who lives here, I just mention it in passing. I apologize if this wore on your nerves. In the future I will definitely see if that is of interest of my clients. I do NOT want people to think this is a movie tour company and I do not show off peoples homes or addresses if they currently live on Kauai. When I go down to Anini beach, I do on occasion mention past stars who made that place their playground but they are all long gone. As far as the Hindu Monastery, I made a point of showing you where it was located which was less than 2 miles from your hotel. The time we were in the neighborhood was not optimal for a visit. The Monastery is a functioning temple and they hold ceremony daily. They allow limited access during the ceremonies, but you cannot visit the temple grounds until ceremony is finished. Also please note if you are reading this:There is no set admission. I like to leave a donation at several of the statues.Proper attire is required for both men and women. The shoulders and lower legs must be covered. There is a small window of opportunity to take in the beauty of this magical place. Ceremony ends at approximately 10:45 and they remain open till noon. Leave yourselves time for more than a quick in and out as this is one of the most peaceful, beautiful places I have ever seen. My apologies if you were unable to return. It was my intention that day, since you had a days to explore was to give you an overview of Kauai's east and North shore. I hope you were able to find a spot and relax. Thank you again, Aloha.

We prefer taking small or private tours because we get to hear a first hand account about the place we are visiting as well as seeing the hidden gems that big tour operators cannot get to. Jay did not disappoint. His knowledge of Kauai is unbelievable. We definitely saw areas of this island that most visitors won't see. He introduced us to plants (ask about the cinnamon tasting plant) and the places where he lived. He even took us to see Mark Zuckerberg's warehouse (a.k.a. his home). If you are visiting Kauai, make sure to book a tour with Jay and you won't be disappointed. And if your Canadian and really want a great tour, ask me for the secret!
