This is a hard review to write because, I'm torn between two views of the experience. First, on the positive side: Karen gave us the tour we wanted and we saw what we wanted to see and learned a lot. Her communication before was great and she gave us a tour very customized to our needs. She's knowledgeable, friendly and flexible. However, there is a really significant downside, too. Ultimately, we would never recommend anyone use her as a guide. The day was consumed with her constant fear of EVERYTHING. Any time a tour guide tells you repeatedly NOT TO EAT THE SLUGS, it's going to be a bad tour. All day was about how dangerous everything on the island is. 30 minutes into the tour and we wanted out. And this was an expensive tour in not-so-great vehicle. Definitely not a value at all. Some people may enjoy hearing constantly how dangerous things are on the island. And appreciate it. We didn't. Ultimately, we're supposed to write a review of what we experienced...and not guess what others may think. I've done private tours on the other islands and had a great time. This one was too safety-conscious...needlessly. all we did was look...we didn't even get in the water.

Thank you for choosing to join me on a private tour and for taking the time to share your honest review. I appreciate that you felt that I gave you the tour you wanted and you saw what you wanted to see and learned a lot. I also appreciate that you felt I gave you a tour very customized to your needs. I am sorry you were disappointed in some areas. If I had known, at the start of the tour, what you were feeling, I would have curtailed other safety education and made sure we went in the ocean. Near the beginning of the tour, it is customary that I find out the top priorities of the day. Time constraints can get in the way of doing or seeing everything on a person’s list and the day gets even shorter with a long sit down lunch. My Honda Odyssey minivan is a 2012 : Well-serviced and clean with great air conditioning. I'm very happy with it. About those darn slugs and snails: Having experienced firsthand the possibility that I may have inadvertently exposed my family and myself to the RLV, ( Rat LungWorm Virus) spread by unknowingly consumed on improperly washed fresh produce, I feel it is my duty to pass that health risk along while vacationing here. Residents in Hawaii are not happy about it either. (An internet search of “ Rat Lungworm Overview | The Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy” leads you to the Hawaii sample testing lab – the key source for accurate information.) I hope the rest of your Kauai vacation was perfect. Aloha and Mahalo

We reserved a tour with Karen for 7 hours. The ocean was too rough to snorkel so she prepared other options for us. We hiked into 2 waterfalls and swam in one of them! An amazing experience. She gave us history and information about the island, showed us other hiking trails and snorkel spots we could visit on our remaining days on the Island. She was interesting and pleasant to be with -- the 7 hours went very fast ! Book her early in your visit to Kauai.

We almost passed on this tour because of the few low rated comments we found on this site before booking. We are very glad we ignored them as we had a great time. We had some unusual circumstances because two of our family members were not able to hike or swim. Karen was able to adjust and made it an enjoyable day anyway. There are interesting facts and places that only the locals know....we would have missed a lot of photo opportunities if we had struck out on our own. This is not a glossy, sleek commercial tour, but more a friend taking you to their favorite places.

I appreciate your taking the time to write and give a 5 Star Review. I remember too, that your family was in agreement with my recommendation that we change the tour from exploring the South side and Waimea Canyon to the exploring the Northshore due to the huge 25 to 40 foot swell on the northshore that day. It was a delightful day with many gorgeous vistas, and a lovely stroll through natural northshore beauty, Mahalo

We had such a great day! I just wish we would have scheduled a full day rather than only five hours. The Monastery visit was amazing and Karen was very knowledgeable and fun. She helped my eight year old learn how to dive down beneath the water while snorkeling. On the hike she taught us a lot about the flora. My kids enjoyed her personality. The hike was muddy but we knew it would be going in. We had no good way to clean our shoes well as we were on the cruise ship so in retrospect I possibly would have chosen to do a less muddy hike. We had to deal with five pair of very muddy tennis shoes for the remainder of the trip and getting them home to ohio.

Mahalo for the 5 star review. We had a shorter and early start tour ( 7:15 am to 12:15 am) due to cruise ship time constraints. I know you were worried that your 8 year old would be afraid of snorkeling but he was not in the least and we had a great time in the tranquil ocean together. In regards to the muddy shoes : in the future, I will make sure that people know that rain forest hikes usually have muddy patches, so if mud is a concern, then a sunny, dry, coastal Kauai hike or stroll is the answer. Thank you again for writing this wonderful review!

Karen was the best. She was very knowledgeable and the type of person that knew a lot of people and places to visit while we are in Kauai. Thanks so much Karen!!!

Sorry for the delay in writing. I so appreciate your review and the 5 Stars. I'm happy you liked some of my favorite Kauai locations. It's great that you booked your tour early in your vacation so you could return to them if you chose. All four sides of Kauai have lots of very special sightseeing places, restaurants, and scenic walking or hiking trails. I am so glad you enjoyed your tour.
