Miss this experience - you miss Aloha.

Despite the challenges of COVID restrictions, the Smith Family luau gives a great experience and value. We take their luau and show every time we re here - and look forward to future visits. First class treatment.

Fun luau with great food!
Mar 2020
A group of friends joined me at Smiths for my birthday and we all enjoyed the food, drinks, and luau. We appreciated the open bar and the food was better than other luaus I've been to. And staff walked around encouraging everyone to have seconds (or thirds!). The luau itself had lots of different performers who were all excellent. The garden grounds are so pretty and it's nice to walk around before dinner.

Authentic Hawaiian Experience

Great evening spent at the Smith family luau. You almost feel like you’re part of the family, or at least wishing you were! Excellent food, beautiful gardens, friendly people, and a positive cultural experience!

Loved it
Feb 2020
We had a very nice time at the luau! The tram ride was fun and the food was excellent! We loved the show and only have one compliant the width of the seating was hard to sit on. I’m not that tall but it didn’t support my height or my husband’s and we were ready to leave due to our legs hurting.

Well worth the price!
Feb 2020
I was immediately struck by the friendliness of the staff from the parking lot on. Everyone was well prepared to assist in any way. The ticket line was streamlined as we purchased tickets in advance and moved quickly through. We were greeted with shell necklaces which was a nice touch. The grounds were beautiful and there was just enough time to walk around it before the Imu ceremony. Afterwards, we grabbed some Mai Tai's that were already out at the bar. Some tables were reserved for families, but we were told to go to anyplace that had a napkin put in the glass as that meant it was open and available. It was nice to have a covered area with open sides to sit in as we did get a few drizzles of rain but enjoyed the breezes.. The buffet was very tasty with lots of variety. Again it was well run and everyone moved through pretty quickly. We found that after the first rush for drinks, we could go to the other bar and order any cocktail we wanted with little wait time.
There was entertainment during dinner and afterwards we strolled over to an amphitheater for the show. I found the show to have lots of variety, the dancers seemed to enjoy their roles and it was impressive.

wasn't expecting the beauty of the farm!

FERN GROTTO - - just do it! Such a fun boat ride and short walk through tropical beauty. The grotto itself is just breathtaking. I actually wanted to do this twice if we had the time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

LUAU - - mixed reviews on this. It gets a 5 of 5 for environment/atmosphere, decor. The landscaping and wild "pets" are just gorgeous! The entertainment was good. There was an open bar, which we weren't expecting, so that was a nice surprise. Down sides were the signature mai tai's just weren't good. Tasted more like watered down rum tea. I mixed mine with fruit punch and made a new tasty drink. The food was about a 3.5. Certainly good, but not great. The show itself was very well done - - professionally produced and very impressive. However, and maybe this is just my ignorance, the dances themselves weren't as entertaining as I've seen elsewhere. Others I have seen were flashier, sexier, livelier.... The dances at Smith's seemed a little low key in comparison. So strictly for entertainment value, this scores a 3.0. Maybe Smith's keeps it much more native and original and the others deliberately jazz them up? All I know is I prefer the jazzier.

Tourist trap
Feb 2020
We attended the Luau as part of a 50th wedding anniversary trip. The venue was packed making it difficult to see the performance well. Lines were long and the food was very average, similar to lunchroom cafeteria fare. The program felt more touristy than traditional. I would not spend this kind of money unless you like tourist glitz. It was definitely not worth the price for us.

Rode the river boat
Jan 2020
The river boat trip up the Wailua River was niceth This time I didn't get any mosquito bites.

We also attended the Luau show for $20 instead of the full Luau for $108 each. It was enjoyable.

Best Luau on Kauai
Mar 2019
Easy to access location from the East side, right off of Kuhio Hwy. and set in a charming, secluded botanical garden where one can walk and peruse the indigenous and non-native plants and trees as well as a variety of birds and fowl. The party/luau is preceded by the traditional, narrated kalua pig preparation and placement into the imu, underground lava-rock oven. Afterward, one is invited to feast on a typical tasty Hawaiian all-you-can-eat buffet with an array of tropical fruits, desserts like haupia pudding, fresh melt-in-your mouth imu-roasted pork, the quintessential Hawaiian poi, mac-salad and more. The hosts truly enjoy their role of introducing visitors to the Hawaiian culture and making everyone feel like they're part of the family. The show starts at dusk and is spectacular in its presentation, set on a low circular stage illuminated by torches with all the cultures present on the islands represented, though the Hawaiian hula is my favorite. Our little girl was 2 years old the first time we went to this particular luau with visiting friends from Europe, and she was spellbound, staying up way past her bedtime taking in the entire show and leaving inspired to learn the hula :D. We all thoroughly enjoyed the entire event and have since sent many visiting friends and family to partake in it as well. All have come away very pleased with the experience.
