HAWAII 2020 ADVENTURES #7: HAWAIIAN SHIRTS MADE IN KAUAI
Nov 2020 • Solo
Two years ago when I traveled to the Big Island I visited the town Hawi. I went inside a local shop that sold crafts and clothes. One of the clothes was a white Hawaiian shirt that showed a blue image of the Big Island. I thought that was cool for a shirt to represent the Island of Hawaii. At that time I felt I had too many Hawaiian shirts so I didn't buy it. I regretted that decision when I came back to the mainland.

I wasn't going to make that same mistake again when I visit another island in Hawaii. When I was in Kauai for 5 days I wanted a Hawaiian shirt that represented Kauai. An added bonus would be if the Hawaiian shirt was also made in Kauai. The first time I came to this store was the Saturday before Thanksgiving. I read reviews about the owner who comes off as unfriendly to customers. Prior to visiting this store I was visiting other stores in Hanapepe that sold Hawaiian shirts. Those stores displayed Hawaiian shirts but the shirt tags stated "Made in Indonesia". This would be like me going to Chinatown in San Francisco to buy things "Made in China" but end up buying items "Made in Singapore". Maybe that is why people go to this store because the Hawaiian shirts are made in Hawaii (more specifically made in Kauai) despite the owner's treatment to customers. When I went here that Saturday she seemed friendly but that was probably due to people in the store. The following Monday would be a different story.

When I went here alone after lunch she wasn't initially friendly to me. She asked where I was staying and I told her Inn Waimea. She said her friend owns that place then she gave me coupons for other stores in Kauai. I felt I was at her good grace. Since she makes her own shirts she asked me when do I want my shirt. I replied what she had in stock. For a one-person shop I was impressed by the number of shirts she made. When I go shopping for clothes I like to take my time but I did feel I was rushed by her. One shirt that intrigued me was a red shirt, which featured black musical bars and notes to reflect the music scene in Kauai as stated by the owner. There were also several blue Hawaiian shirts but I have slightly too many Hawaiian shirts with that color hence I was interested with that red Hawaiian shirt. I decided to buy the shirt that featured turtles as the owner claimed it is her best seller. After selecting the turtle shirt I showed the owner the 10% discount when I checked-in. She was shocked and appalled when she saw the discount. The shirt costs $85 but with a discount I shaved off $8.50. She tried her best not to rant at me but she complained how corporations are raking in all the money from small businesses. She claimed Yelp had no authority to provide the check-in coupon without her consent. From my understanding companies like Yelp would not provide a check-in discount unless the owner of the store signs an agreement. My thing at this shop was not to say anything and let her calm down. If she wouldn't honor my 10% discount check-in I would leave. She honored my discount. This is to let you know if you have a check-in discount she may not honor it. Also the owner only takes cash. At the end she was crying because she stated four stores around her street had closed down to do COVID. I consoled her but that doesn't explain her past treatment to customers. Difficulties such as COVID doesn't change people but they reveal people who they really are. After reading the reviews and visiting the store the owner is what she is. This is to let you know that this store isn't for everyone especially those who take their time deciding what item(s) to buy.

This is how I based my rating. The Hawaiian shirts are rated as a 4-star. The owner's attitude is rated as 2-star. Therefore the average and final rating is 3-star.

Rice Bags
Oct 2019
Saw ad on Kauai TV about this place. Have wanted a pair of rice bag shorts ever since I lived in Hawaii 45 years ago. Jacqueline is fantastic. All handmade by her in her store. Has a lot of good Hawaiian shirts, all handmade by her. She is a little more expensive that ABC but you know that you are getting AUTHENTIC, HANDMADE, Hawaiian goods

On Hawaiian time and personality
Sep 2018 • Couples
My husband collects Hawaiian shirts and it getting hard to find one he likes that fits. Read about this shop in a guide book and came specifically for him. Jacqueline is pleasant enough if she’s in the right mood and not busy. She had a limited supply of fabrics to choose from and only a few already made. My husband picked out a shirt at around 11am and she said it could be done the same day since we were flying out the next day. She said to call her in a couple of hours before we headed back to our hotel after exploring that side of the island. The shirt was going to be $95 with a $35 deposit cash only. When we called 5 hours later she said she had too many distractions and hadn’t finished the shirt. Asked if we could come the next day. We said we only had the car 1 day and we’re flying the next. (We told her this when we placed the order). We ended up stopping at the shop the same day, paying for the rest of the shirt with the promise that it would get mailed to us. It hasn’t arrived yet so here’s hoping by husband likes it and it fits. If it were me, I wouldn’t go back or place a deposit if the shirt couldn’t be done in the time promised.

Funky Shop in Hanapepe
Apr 2018 • Couples
We came across this shop while we were in this charming town to see the swinging bridge.

My husband purchased a shirt. He picked out his material and she told us to come back the next day at 11:00 am to pick it up. When we arrived, it wasn't done yet so we walked around for about 40 minutes while she finished it. The workmanship was good. The shirt was $75.

Jacqueline is very colorful and isn't bashful in expressing her opinion. If you want an interesting Hawaiian experience, stop in and get one of hers.

Saw an article about this store and had to visit. As soon as we landed we drove to her store and ordered some Hawaiian shirts. We picked out the materials and she had them ready before we left in 3days. It is a fun and memorable gift from your trip to Hawaii. Definitely worth the side trip.

Funky Shop - Great Hand Made shirts
Jan 2018 • Family
Jackie is a character and a sweetheart - also an outstanding seamstress who cranks out beautiful Hawaiian shirts. I'm a big guy and have a lot of inexpensive shirts that just don't fit right. She made me a great shirt that looks and fits great. You are going to pay more but they are competitive with any high end shirt (like Tommy Bahama). She'll get it done in a couple days. Lots of other hand-sewn stuff as well. Hanapepe is at little tattered and reminiscent of old Hawaii days and Jackie's shop fits right in. Say hi to the lovebirds Bougie & Bacall. Cash only for purchases.

My wife bought pants here last year and has received so many compliments on these that this year we searched and found some Hawaiian themed fabric at Vicky's Fabrics in Kapaa and asked Jacqueline to make another pair. While shopping for fabric she was torn between a turtles scene and a palm tree scene but ended up with the turtles, could not be happier with the finished product! I went "hiking" , bought the palm tree fabric and had Jacqueline make more pants. Went "hiking" again a few days later to pick them up, was planning to keep until Christmas but gave them to her for Mother's Day, she flipped out- talking best Mother's Day ever- Thanks Jacqueline!

Horrible
Apr 2017 • Solo
If I could rate this zero stars I would. Ran in here to ask a simple question about a store we couldn't find and even browsed while waiting on the woman in charge. Turns out she was extremely rude and within seconds of talking to her I was boiling with rage. I honestly don't understand how she has five stars on here. The most rude person I've ever met.

My husband was captivated by a shirt that he wants for his son - but the only one in the shop is too large. Not to worry, Jacqueline is making one in time for us to take it home. On a roll, we chose a rice sack from which she will also make a shirt for my husband. She prefers to make men's shirts, but also has children's sizes. Just talking with Jacqueline is a treat, and if you are interested in being in a real seamstress' shop, make time for a visit. Delightful experience!
