Doug and Sandy have been giving authentic Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukelele concerts twice a week at Hanalei Community Center since 1999. They're a standard attraction and an excellent way for visitors to learn about the history of Hawaii's slack key music as well as old stories that inspired the music - Sandy also relates some of the cultural connections of the survival of this native Hawaiian music. Their primary purpose is to make people aware of the history and cultural importance of this type of music. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families.

We never miss a McMaster concert. The music is soothing and the stories sharing the history of Hawaiian slack key guitars is fascinating. They are a lovely couple and keep the audience engaged. They also perform in Princeville now in the community center.

We keep returning to these mellow, insightful concerts which we bring home with us on their CD's. Excellent for doing yoga and meditation too ....very healing . I used this wonderful music when I did physiotherapy after having knee replacements. The pace and feel of the concert is very laid back and invites you to take some time out to enjoy... More

A guest at the resort made comment to my wife and she looked it up. They do two concerts per week (ours was concert number 1,837!) that cost $15/senior and run 2 hours plus a 30 minute intermission, at which you can have a bathroom break, but more importantly, they serve Oreo cookies and water during the break. Oh yeah,... More

We had the opportunity to enjoy the sounds of the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar and Ukulele presentation of Doug and Sandy McMaster at the Princeville Community center in February. The whole experience was very relaxing, informative and, dare I say, inspirational. We appreciated that Doug composed all of the selections that were featured that evening and learned that often the... More

It's a refreshing look into aloha with soothing music and "talk story" that make you feel as if you are included in their khanate (family). Don't miss this unique experience!

We've been making the long, beautiful drive to Hanalei to see the McMaster concerts for many years. Always a magical & spiritual experience for us that slows the vacation fervor mode down & takes you back to some of Hawaii's core values. Sandy's 'talk story' along with Doug's gift of brilliant slack key music is more nurturing than any fancy... More

This was the third time we saw Doug and Sandy's concert. They get better and better every time. Slack Key Guitar is a very old tradition and the chance to hear one of the best and nicest duos share their music and their joy with the audience is a privilege. The music is unique and relaxing.

I never heard of slack key until coming to this island and so glad I looked into it further. I know virtually nothing about music technique but I know what I like to listen to. This is a rare Hawaiian-style art form that has an interesting history told by Sandy between songs that she and Doug play. You really need... More

Knowing nothing about slack key guitar, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I experienced was a lovely introduction to the graceful sounds of Hawaii. This soulful music transmits the essence of Hawaiian culture both past and present. Doug is a gifted guitar player. Sandy tells the stories reflected in the sweet musical sounds and explains the history and technique... More
