Petroglyph Field
Aug 2021 • Couples
Walked along the King’s trail to see the petroglyphs. This half mile walked included dozens of carvings in the dried lava, with most of them coming around wind breaks and caves along the trail.

This was a nice way to start our trip, as it served as a reminder of the generations who called this home and traveled from north to south (or south to north) near the shore.

Totally worth the quick walk

We kind of just stumbled onto this place but I was really impressed. Just park near the Shell station in the King's Shops and walk down. You're walking over a lava field so it's a bit tough going, but very worth it. Once you get into the area where they are, there are tons of Petroglyphs. I thought I saw something about this being the highest concentration of Petroglyphs at a single site in Hawaii and I don't doubt it.

Nice easy hike, aka walk, through lava fields
Jun 2021
A quick and easy walk/hike through Waikoloa Village to view ancient petroglyphs. The path is well marked and once you get out in to the field there are plenty of petroglyphs to view. Signs along the way explain about some of the features and what is/isn't known about the petroglyphs.

If you are in the Hilton Waikoloa Village area at Kings Shops or Queens Marketplace take a little time to walk this trail and see this.

Fun little walk if you have some time to waste

Cool to see some history etched in lava rock. It’s not a go-to destination but was a nice stop when we were early to meet friends.

Fun hike hunting for different petroglyphs

Amazing trail right next to our hotel and shops. About a mile hike through lava rocks with amazing petroglyphs to see along the way.

Short historical hike
Apr 2021 • Family
I did this hike with my teenage daughter. The petroglyphs are visible from the street if you just want to swing by and see them. But it was our first time in the lava fields so it was very interesting. It’s a fairly easy hike but wear sturdy shoes because it is on lava rocks. No shade.

A glance into the past

Mauna Lua Resort holds the entrance to the petroglyph field. It is extensive, covered with depictions of warriors and other symbols. The path to the petroglyphs is rough and full of tangled trees – quite beautiful, actually.

Very rough trail and no shade.

It is one of significant historical place and trail. Specially, 4th grade local kids learn many details from social study. It is not super long trail but you need well preparation, because of rough and very hot trail on Lava. Please bring some water. Next to King’s shopping center and a golf course. You can park your car at the shopping center, but they do not open yet.

Petroglyphs
Feb 2020 • Couples
Too bad some have chosen to create fake ones and/or deface existing. No respect for history or Hawaiian culture. Take the walk on cool day, avoid heat art of days to sun heat coming off lava. We found multiple Nene families near the golf course next to the Petroglyph field.

Very Peaceful Walk
May 2019
It's a very peaceful educational walk. Very, very interesting reading the wonderful very old petroglyphs. This area is very easy to get to as its well signed just to the North of the Waikoloa Shell gas station. The pathway is very well maintained so it would be easy for any wheelchair bound person.
