We traveled to Hilo aboard the NCL Pride of America. I knew we wanted to maximize out time we had on the island and in the park. Research showed that Epic Lava is not just a tour company, they are respected experts in the park. Being we visited on a cruise ship, the time we had on the island didn't coincide with the tour times they offer. John was willing to alter his day and provide a private tour just for our group. John was unbelievably knowledgeable and took us places in the park that we would have never found without him. He didn't just show us things, he explained the history and evolution of the park. Lava tubes, steam vents, local flora, earthquake ruined roads, and Pele's tears...wouldn't have found any of these without him. Snacks and drinks were provided. The park is huge. You could spend months visiting and not see everything, so make sure you have a guide like Epic Lava to maximize your visit.

We were originally skeptical of this tour because there was no lava flowing, but we’re so glad we chose to do it. We did the sunrise hike and we were lucky to have John to ourselves. He was extremely knowledgeable, funny, and passionate, and he made sure to add extra stops during the tour to cater to our personal interests. He even gave us some places to see on the Big Island during the rest of our stay. The snacks were great and a nice reprieve after walking for a few hours. We couldn’t recommend this tour enough, and we can’t wait to make it back when the lava starts flowing again!

We were originally skeptical of this tour because we wouldn’t be able to see lava flowing, but we’re so glad we chose to do it. We did the sunrise tour and were lucky enough to have John all to ourselves. He was extremely knowledgeable, funny, and passionate about everything he does and the park itself, and he made sure to add some extra stops on the tour based on our personal interests. He even gave us some places to see on the big island after the tour was done. The snacks were great and a nice way to take a short break after a few hours of walking around. We can’t recommend this tour enough, and hope to make it back when the lava is flowing again!

John (the owner) is very knowledgeable and passionate about about volcanos. It was well worth the early wake up call to experience the park when there was no one around, John took us to places in the park that we would not have seen on our own. We have a new appreciation for volcanos and enjoyed the rest of our time in volcano so much more after the tour.

We read the previous reviews and knew that there isn't active lava flowing on the island at the moment. But given that as you drive around and visit anywhere on the island you see lava everywhere this tour helps you understand the history of how those lava flows came to be. Also learned a lot more about the island than just about volcanoes. We did the early morning tour and the sunrise over Kilauea was spectacular. The guides are awesome and have first hand knowledge of recent eruptions on the islands, which makes the tour super interesting. We were lucky to have Jeff on our tour, he worked in the park for many, many years and has had first hand knowledge of volcano events and other events in the park.
