We had such a magical time on this tour. But what I want to preface this review with is what to expect when you’re doing tours on the islands. Hawaii is not an amusement park, it’s not controlled or predictable, so please do not get sassy with people with visibility isn’t pristine or the volcano isn’t as active as you dreamed. Believe it or not, no one can control that. What I learned from this tour is tours like this have true value when it comes to the tour guide, and John was an absolute gem. He doesn’t work for the National Parks and I think understanding the relationship between people in John’s position vs the Government ran park systems will help you understand his perspective a little bit more. A few negative reviews on this page have a few “white bread” statements about him being a little rebellious in his nature and I think those people need to suck it up and have a genuine conversation with guy instead of judging him. Don’t be so sensitive going into this. Also don’t visit the park before this tour and then claim it’s boring, yes you can do it yourself, but you have no idea what you are even looking at, and even the people NOT on the tour were swarming us to listen to what he had to say. He gave us perspective into the beautiful lore that makes up Hawaiian culture and it really helped us feel more connected with what we were experiencing, and there is so much more than just the lava. John was nice enough to haul along his telescope so we could get a true feel for the power of the lava. Thankfully for us that morning, we saw some pretty amazing activity. If you have any doubts about showing up for the 5am tour, I couldn’t jump up and down enough to convince you that THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO GO! Beyond the lava, we walked around the area to look at the unique rock formations and how they were formed. We got some fun insight to some edible goodies that grow around the park too. John’s passion is unparalleled, his story that drew him to the volcano is true and heartfelt, and it’s hard not to get stoked when someone like John is guiding you along. Don’t be like me and forget to get cash to tip!

This is the second time I’ve booked a tour with Epic Lava. Both times were informative and I learned things I would not have known without a guide. Based upon their recommendation, I booked the morning tour. Yes 5 am is very early but totally worth it. My husband and I were able to witness the lava flowing and spewing (from a far safe distance). Epic Lava brought a telescope that really helped us see the details. We also learned a lot about the landscape, flora, and fauna and left with a greater appreciation of Mother Nature.

Sure, you can see the eruption on your own and not spend any extra money. But if you go with John from Epic Lava, you get to see the lava lake up close (through the tech that he brings) and he gives you video and still images from the day you were there. Not only that, but he takes you a little further and shows you how to locate Pele's Hair and Pele's Tears, gives you some history about the information of the Hawaiian islands and their culture, an understanding of Pele and how the Hawaiians interact with her, information on the flora and fauna of the national park (including how invasive species arrived on the island and how to identify them). He even gives some survival tips. His stories are fun and sometimes unbelievable - but I looked them up later and they are legit. it was worth every penny!

You will not be disappointed with the knowledge, personal excitement, and sights when booking with Epic Lava. John is an amazing guide who knows so much about the history of the island along with being able to describe what has happened with the recent eruptions in 2018. He messaged us the day before our 5am tour letting us know that they would most likely be no lava flow that day, but was willing to give up his day off (we didn't know until after that he was supposed to be off that day) in order to give us the best chance of seeing actual lava flow. Check out his YouTube of Epic Lava and make sure you book with him!

We had a great time with Epic Lava Tours. John took us to a place where we could see the lava and used a telescope to get close-up views. He taught our family about the flora and fauna and history of the area. Extremely interesting and engaging!
