We had a great experience. Guide was passionate and passionating, and told us many stories that made the tour as fun and pleasant as instructive
Very understandable for people who doesn't know much about volcanos like me.
"Epic lava" had been highly recommended by friends. Now it is my turn to warmly recommend

Anyone can tour the volcano, but with kids it’s sometimes hard to keep them engaged on a walk. Especially since there is no lava right now. Booking with Epic Lava was the best! We have 5 kids ages 15-6, they stayed engaged the whole time while learning geology, cultural history, chemistry and a old hero survival tales. It was a short tour, unlike the other 12 hour all day island tours. This is a great choice for everyone, but especially families to make an impression on the kids (and they might learn something)

The sunrise tour with Epic Lava was awesome. John had such passion and knowledge for the volcanoes and park history, and kept our three kiddos totally engaged for the three hour tour with his stories. We loved learning about both the volcanoes and the surrounding nature of the park. Highly recommend!

We were extremely disappointed with our tour with Epic Lava Tours, John was dishonest with us and got us to book by lying. We regretted buying with him and would recommend to anyone.
We met John at the park just after the volcano erupted and he seemed great, we talked about tours and he said that because of covid he was now only doing private tours. My friends and I had agreed that we would only do private tours during our stay because we were afraid of Covid, and so when he said his tour was private we decided to book with him. After I booked I texted John and once again he confirmed that he would turn off the reservation and he literally wrote “it will just be the five of us next Monday!”.
When we arrived on Monday, there were 2 more people. John pretended like nothing was happening. When we complained he said “what can I say, now that the volcano erupted people really want to see the lava”, he didn’t even apologize. He then said that the max allowed by the park was 9 people so we shouldn’t complain.
We were quite shocked and disappointed. The tour itself was not great, John spent his time criticizing the park rangers. The tour is within the trails of the volcano park (we had done most of them by ourselves already in our previous visit, so we were super bored). As expected we didn’t see the lava, this is not as big of a surprise as we knew it was likely, but I wanted to mention it because people might think we can see the lava again with the new eruption, which was not the case as of 12/28/20.
John showed us an illegal path to see the lava behind the safety lines, and told us that if we went around 1-2 am we would definitely see lava and avoid rangers. We considered it but honestly after he lied to us about the tour we didn’t feel comfortable risking our lives on his word.
About halfway in the tour John also removed his mask even though he had said that everybody would be wearing masks. We had to ask him to put it back.
After the tour we contacted John to share our disappointment and he just ignored us.

This was our most expensive item of the trip, more expensive than a manta ray tour, and it was such a waste. There are so many better ways to spend your money.

I tried calling this place over 5 times and emailed 2 inquiries over 3 weeks - no response. The website barely has any information on their sunrise lava hike and I just wanted more info like the itinerary, what’s included, etc.

I don’t understand how a business can charge over $150 per person and not be willing to answer a few questions about the trip. I am very disappointed and do hope that they care enough to get back to me.

We had booked a group tour to get the best view of the lava. John was there on time at the agreed meeting point and led us to a place where we had a good view of the lava and almost no other tourists were on site. Although we could only see the lava from a distance, but this sight alone was breathtaking!

Through the telescope brought by John and his cell phone attached there, we could see all the details of the lava lake in the crater. Afterwards, John uploaded the recorded videos to our Dropbox, so we have some great souvenir videos. Many thanks for that!

Visiting the Volcano before sunrise was definitely a highlight of our Hawaii vacation. If you have the opportunity to see molten lava there, you should definitely book a tour with Epic Lava as well. All the additional information makes the visit there even more impressive and you can feel John's enthusiasm for volcanoes.

I was very disappointed by the tour, because the fotos suggest a different experience and for over 100$ I think having other expectations is valild.
At the moment there is only one possibility to see lava in the park, which is the lake in the crater and it can only be seen (officially) from one spot and the ranges are happy to tell you where. This is not epic lava's fault, but I want to point out that at least by eye you won't see much more on this tour than you would as a regular tourist and you will NOT walk in an active lava field or visit any other sites than around the crater. On the positive the guy has a nice big teleskope and sends you fotos of your trip, that you can't get without heavy professional camera equipment. He is also devinetly very passionat about the volcano and everything related to it. He can also give you info on the lokal plants and animals as well as the park's administration. If you have several days in Volcano NP, he will also tell you when the lava is going to be the most active, as he tracks the data and webcams daily.

Conclusion: Do it only if you want to have a little bit better experience than if you do it on your own (maybe take a long lens or some binoculars) and if you don't mind the money or if you want to support a passionat local in what I gues is a hard time at the moment

And on a personal note, I didn't really like all his talking about his private stories, best buddies and NP Administration, that's not what I would book a tour for.

John invited his friend Jeffrey Judd, to jointly lead our extended family on a private tour. The two of them did an excellent job ar providing a very informative and entertaining tour for my six grandchildren and their parents and extended family members after dark. His use of a telescope for viewing the distant eruption was especially helpful in bringing the 'lava experience' that much closer and more exciting for all of us. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended tour with John, a real expert. We got some truly phenomenal storytelling and a considerate, charismatic, and unpretentious tour guide in John. He was truly the real deal and educated us on every aspect of the history, geology, botany, volcanology, and mythology of the park and the island that we were curious about. Despite some challenging weather conditions, which he warned us about, he delivered a wonderful experience and veritably "epic" views of the caldera.

He got as excited as we did watching the volcano, which went a really long way with all the rain! We also appreciated the expert recommendations on scheduling due to weather and volcano activity.

Don't miss out. Epic Lava Tours and lava expert John are really worth your time when visiting Volcanoes National Park.

I booked this tour because I wanted a first hand experience with the current lava flow in the area. They were very accommodating and rescheduled our trip when the day we planned to go there was no lava flow. Walking out to the volcano and seeing the eery glow was amazing. The stories and explanation of the history of the volcano by John was worth the price. He even took pictures and shared them as well as a video through his telescope. This was definitely a highlight to the trip.
