This was such a great experience not only as an amateur photographer but to learn about the local culture of Hawaii and Volcano National Park. Ken is an outstanding photographer with a kind gentle personality that made it really fun to learn and try to get the right shots. He knew all the perfect places to go and times of the day. He was so accommodating for the two days that I worked with him. One night we were planning to do astrophotography but it was clouded over so my husband and I went to dinner at Volcano House. When we walked out the sky was clear with the milky way right there. We called Ken, picked him up, and headed for a great viewing area for the Milky Way to do night photography. We also went to the coast above Hilo to view the falls, most spectacular were the three falls at Umama. I would highly recommend Ken and hope to go back soon!

Over the years, I have taken numerous photography classes and this year I decided to make it my main hobby. So much so that I upgraded to a full frame camera. Camera in hand, I headed to Hawaii planning on taking photos on my own. However, after a referral from a Volcano Nat’l Park staff to a local photographer, who in turn referred me to Ken, I spent two days touring the island with him. Ken helped me connect the dots from those classes as well as shared new techniques. He helped me figure some things out with my new camera since I had only had it for two months. Also, Ken provided a lens and filters I could use for the various shoots he had planned since I unfortunately only brought with me a 14mm lens for shooting stars and the 24-120mm lens that came with my camera. The first day we focused on composition and proper exposure while visiting some of the most amazing landscape I have ever seen in the Volcano Nat’l Park. We ended the day shooting stars from various locations in the park. The second day started with a tutorial in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop; followed up by a trip up the coast shooting various waterfalls ending our day at Laupahoehoe Beach Park, with its massive banyan tree and spectacular coast line. Ken is very friendly and knowledgeable not only about photography but also Hawaii and its history and culture. I can say without any hesitation the time and money were well spent. When I return to Hawaii next year, I plan on touring with him again.

I am embarrassed to say, over the years I have booked group photography tours on the Big Island. I am an amateur photographer, wanting to take better pictures and I wouldn't justify the expense of a private tour. What a mistake! After two days with Ken, I will never book a group tour again. The in-depth attention to locations, composition, camera settings, and processing, exceeded my expectations. Worth every penny. And it doesn't hurt that Ken is a very nice person and is very patient with what some might say are pretty stupid questions.

Ken is an outstanding photographer and teacher. I took two photo tours with him and learned so much. He is patient and kind. He showed me many beautiful sites and gave great instruction on framing shots and selecting optimal lenses and aperture for each photograph. I learned to see things in a way I would not have noticed before. Ken also has a wealth of knowledge on processing software. I hope to learn more from Ken on processing. Check out Ken’s website. His photography is art in the truest sense. In addition to the great photography experience, I enjoyed Ken’s vast knowledge of the history of the area and culture. All around a wonderful time spent. A plus.

I have never done a photo tour, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I throughly enjoyed my day with Ken Goodrich and he definitely exceeded my expectations. Ken was extremely nice and answered my endless list of questions at the locations he carefully selected. It rained a lot that day and Ken he was quick to change the itinerary. He was so nice he held an umbrella over me and my camera so I could concentrate and get good shots. Later, we went back to his studio where he showed me techniques in Lightroom and introduced me to various editing applications. Ken showed me how to change settings on my camera based on the histogram. This was a game changer for me as I thought I was doing this correctly. Because of this tour, I learned new photographic skills and have plenty to work on since we met. This was the best thing we did during our stay! Here a few samples of photos I took that day. Thank you Ken Goodrich, you’re an amazing photographer and teacher. (This Photo Retreat was prior to the Corona Virus pandemic. Everything started shutting down shortly after this photo tour and I just didn’t feel like posting, but I did want to let everyone know what a great tour this was for me.)
