The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a 501(c)(3) Scientific and Educational non-profit, whose mission is to serve as a nature preserve and sanctuary, a living seed bank, and a study center for trees and plants of the tropical world. The Garden is dedicated to the collection and display of the world's tropical plants, and to the education of both children and adults about the plight of the world's rainforests. At a time when rainforest plants are disappearing at an alarming rate, the Garden is working to preserve as many species as possible for the benefit of future generations.

Access to this garden is down a fairly steep paved pathway. But for an extra $5 you can get an assist from a golf cart. The signage is quite good -- both for pointing to areas of interest as well as identification of plants. The highlight of this garden for me is the orchid area.

This was a 1.5 hour stop to fully appreciate the several thousand species of flora native to Hawaii and imported as well. My 4 yo especially enjoyed hunting for geckos in antherium alley!

We have been to Hilo several times and never stopped here. This time we did ... we didn't know what we were missing! The care and detail provided in this garden is amazing. The growth around creeks, ponds and waterfalls is stunning as is the blowhole at the beach. Wear walking shoes and look up as well as down. We... More

I absolutely loved the time I spent at Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. It is a short drive from Hilo. Definitely go in the morning. I did and it was not very crowded. Be sure to go all the way down to the waterfront. It is spectacular.

Have been visiting the Big Island since 1992 and adore this garden! So many beautiful orchids, huge ferns, massive tree sized plants which I'm only used to seeing in nurseries and greenhouse stores! Very informative staff - Ryan in the orchard garden showed us so many unusual and somewhat hidden examples of his charges! Wear walking shoes, insect repellent is... More

Admission is $15 per person, which helps maintain this nearly 50 year-old creation. It is a restful edition to a beach day. The gardens contain many grand plant specimens from around the world. I would have preferred that the displays were of Hawaii native species, and hope nothing is invasive. The gardens contain a blowhole in a small sea cave,... More

So many crazy beautiful plants, trees, flowers, etc etc it is overwhelming! They even have a golf cart to take visitors up and down a steep walk if you aren't able to hoof it. This gorgeous garden is on a scenic road you will also enjoy. $15 adult admission and it is worthy of the cost.

First off, the scenic drive from Hilo to the Gardens is worth it alone. The gardens themselves are beautiful and are a nice easy stroll from the road through the grounds to great views over the ocean. If you're driving around the east of Hawaii, this is a great place to stop for an hour or so.

This garden is on my must do list every time I'm in the area and is a plant/flower lovers paradise. There is a mile or so walk through a tropical with spectacular blooms at every turn even some blooms on plants that I didn't think bloomed. The walk includes ocean views and a picnic area to visit, water falls, and... More
