The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a 501(c)(3) Scientific and Educational non-profit, whose mission is to serve as a nature preserve and sanctuary, a living seed bank, and a study center for trees and plants of the tropical world. The Garden is dedicated to the collection and display of the world's tropical plants, and to the education of both children and adults about the plight of the world's rainforests. At a time when rainforest plants are disappearing at an alarming rate, the Garden is working to preserve as many species as possible for the benefit of future generations.

I was expecting plants and flowers that will "awe" you. Nothing spectacular or breathtaking. The fee is to support the organization to keep it going.

We have been to many Botanical Gardens world-wide. This garden was among the best, with its combination of floral beauty, with spectacular ocean views (Onomea Bay) and waterfalls. Akaka Fals & this garden, were stops along the way when relocating from Mauna Lani to VNP. The entry fee was $15. There is a cart for those who need it. We... More

Completely agree with the 5-star reviews of this place. The variety and beauty of the species of plants and trees is truly spectacular - you could take hundreds of photographs here. Recommend the scenic byway north of Hilo en route (only a detour of a couple of extra miles but worth it for the views) and it leads you right... More

Designed by a California couple who started clearing the junked-out acreage they purchased in the 1970s, this garden is a glorious combination of natural and cultivated rain forest, with waterfalls, a lake, tropical birds and a gorgeous and huge collection of exotic flowers and plants. From the road, it seems that this might be a super hot hike, but down... More

We saw this as our first stop on a private tour of Hilo with Robert from Kamaina Tours. It was so beautiful - waterfalls, ocean and beach views and flowers and trees from all over. The orchid garden was really gorgeous. Hot and humid but well worth it. Bug spray is a must! Even the kids liked it!

Its just about 1/2 hour from Hilo but wow, is it worth the drive, which is in and of itself quite beautiful. You could take in Akaka falls first and top it off with a visit to the botanical gardens. This place was apparently literally a dump when a successful business man bought it and began restoring the place, a... More

This garden was impressive. Despite the $15 admission price per person it is well worth it. The grounds are pristine and meticulously maintained. The park is a good size and goes down to the ocean with a private beach area. It was hot and humid, and there were mosquitoes but that's to be expected since it is the jungle. Try... More

A beautful, idyllic garden paradise developed over many years by a local entrepreneur and his family. All three of us were taken by the waterfalls, the ocean views and the plethora of both native and nonindigenous plants. Restfull for the soul and envigorating for the spirit.f
