The Big Island of Hawaii (East side) has three Farmer's Markets -- the Hilo Farmer's Markets (Wednesdays and Saturdays), the Kinoole Market on Saturdays (where many locals go to) and the Makuu Market on Sundays. Each is special in its own right. Makuu Market has some excellent food concessions -- the best patelles ever (you can eat them there or... More

If you plan to visit this market you need to go early......some things start to sell as early as 6:30am.....if you get there about lunch time most of the interesting items would have sold......like many markets there are great local people that sell their own things....but...understand that many just buy and resell things ....like all the orchids are NOT GROWN... Great local market with breakfast and lunch being served. Picked up local produce and fruit for our stay. A lot of booths with local goods.

This is a must visit while on the Big Island. We enjoyed several hours roaming the different vendors - everything from fresh produce and baked goods, yard sale type booths as well as arts and crafts vendors. You most definitely need to eat lunch while there, don't forget to try the hot malasadas!

There's fruits and veggies, organic, non gmo's, gluten free baked goods as well as regular baked and other food items. You'll find an assortment of foods being cooked to order as well as premade foods. Also vendors are selling jewelry, clothes, musical instruments, oils, lotions, teas and even some used items.

Travelers must stop here while you're in town. Help support local economy and eat fresh produce at an amazingly affordable price. We would stop here and buy bags and bags of fruit to bring with us throughout the day.

Every Sunday, the Maku'u Farmers Market puts up it's tents and opens it's artistic wares and varying ethnic food stalls to mainly the local public. We found out about this through friends. We went earlier in the day and just roamed but returned again for lunch after swimming at the thermal pools near Pahoa. Great place to people watch and... More

I live in Puna and go to this market just about every week. I buy my produce there, get some tasty food, and wander the market to see friends and check out the stands. This market has such a cool, laid back vibe. Its definitely a favorite of both tourists and locals. The green papaya salad stand is my favorite.

Maku'u market is a Sunday tradition. Get there early for a good parking place at the cost of $1. I buy all my fruit and vegetables at Maku'u from local farmers. There is a large number of food vendors there selling delicious breakfast and lunch items. Every week there is a different band playing.

I do my Sunday morning fruits and veggies shopping at the Maku'u Market. If you are looking to get some island life, this is a must do and see! Lots of food vendors, variety of vendors and we always seem to find our friends and neighbors there so we talk story!
