Peaceful Gem
Sep 2019
Beautiful surrounding, comfortable and reasonably priced rooms in the guest house, Easy jumping off point for other south end adventures. The hosts are relaxed and knowledgable about the surrounding area and local history. The temple is open to guests. I really enjoyed doing my morning sitting there. Finally I like the though that my dollars were going to support sustaining this little gem instead of a private persons income.

A Tranquil Diversion on your Big Island exploration
Jun 2019
Just a short drive into Wood Valley from Pahalo on your trip around the southern end of the island, this small but beautiful temple offers a wonderful opportunity to decelerate and reflect on the wonders of Hawai'i. The tree lined access road passes by ranches and coffee/macadamia farms, with occasional clear views of Mauna Loa. An easy and rewarding side trip on your way to Volcanoes NP.

A place of peace and healing -- and plenty of room for kids to stretch their legs
Dec 2017 • Family
It's impossible to describe the feeling of being in this temple -- its quiet, unpretentious spirituality is a balm to the soul. I would never visit the Big Island without stopping here to soak in the blessedness that permeates this space. Regardless of what religion or creed you follow, the temple's atmosphere, which is steeped in kindness, transcends all boundaries. It's a great place to visit even if you have kids -- there's lots of space for them to run around and be kids while the grown-ups take turns in the temple.

Gentle peaceful retreat,
Feb 2017 • Solo
A friend recommended the Wood Valley Temple and, as I was wanting time for a quiet spiritual retreat and fortunate to have the time, I booked a week there. The climate was delightful; though it did rain for part of my stay, that added to the magic. The guest house, which is down a stone stairway from the temple area, had one or two other guests during my week, and we interacted a bit, generally when we met in the common kitchen. I was aware that there is no food near buy so packed a week's worth of simple items. Michael and Marya were very friendly and informative hosts and also gave me all the privacy I wanted. I've been drawn to Tibetan Buddhism lately and appreciated the opportunity (optional; no pressure!) to join them every morning for traditional chanting in the historic temple built in the early twentieth century. I had to walk up the stairs to the temple gardens to get wireless access, and a quarter mile down the road to get cellphone access; under ordinary circumstances this would have been seriously inconvenient, but on this silent retreat I found it a helpful way to disconnect. Mostly I enjoyed time to myself to meditate, read, walk through the tropical woods, and enjoy participating in the miracle of life.

A Blessed Hawai'ian Retreat Center
Jan 2017 • Solo
I found this worthy sanctuary in 2005 and it remains my destination of choice for when I need to retreat from the world at large and reconnect with my interior self. The morning prayers and the Tara Temple are added place of refuge. This location of retreat allows you privacy and connection with the natural experience that is the real Hawai'l, unspoiled and slow. You can come and go as you like, fix you own meals and the cost is not prohibitive, rather quite the opposite. Another added bonus is its location. From the road off Hwy 11, you turn right on Pikake and travel another 5 miles to the temple. It is easy and beautiful. Once there you will understand its value in placement. This is a most precious secret -- so share. Aloha and mahalo.
