Stopped by here twice on my recent Hawaiian vacation and both times there were sea turtles everywhere in the water and the odd one up on land. I went snorkeling with them but the water is often rough and a whole lot colder than other...More
During our recent trip to the Island of Hawaii we made a road trip to the black sand beach. The sight is absolutely beautiful and worthy of a visit. One side of the beach has finer sand that swimmers and waders were able to enjoy;...More
This is a very lovely spot - genuine black sand that is unbelievably soft under your feet, picturesque and, if you are up to snorkelling, you may find yourself surrounded by sea turtles which seem to love this spot. They often haul up onto the...More
Green sea turtles frequent the beach and we were treated to seeing two today. The beach is beautiful. Be sure to see the lily pond behind it. A school group (5th graders?) were conducting research when we visited. Great to see nature "alive."
This beach was our last stop of the day and what a gem it was! Black sand beach with plenty of coconut trees for shade. There was a turtle resting on the beach. There is a beautiful lily pond and bridge behind the beach -...More
This was our last stop on a day we drove to South Point and Green Sand beach. It's definitely something to see. I think it's a really pretty beach and the texture of the sand is real cool. The fact that turtles also haul out...More
Came at sunset and the beach wasn't packed. The black sand is pretty, and sea turtles like coming in around dusk. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see any on the sand, because they were having trouble making it through the break!
Good size bay beach that’s not too crowded. There were a few turtles basking in the sun and they multiplied during the day. Lots of palm trees for shade, some picnic tables, snack and souvenir stands. This was the second time we have seen a...More

We stayed in Hilo during our trip and it was about an hour and a half drive from there. We made a day of it and went to see South Point and the green sand beach as well. We left very early in the morning and drove to South Point to look around, then went out to the Green sand beach (we rented a 4x4 Jeep and drove to the beach instead of walking) then on our way back we stopped at Punaluu Black sand beach. We did pack food, but also stopped at Punaluu Bake shop after the green sand beach and had a great lunch as well as delicious deserts. Hope you enjoy your trip. Aloha
