Mauna Kea Summit and Stars Small-Group Adventure Tour

566 reviews
Travel up Mauna Kea for a small-group sunset and stargazing tour by luxury 4WD van. Leave the off-road drive to the pros, and ride from Kona or Waikoloa to a historic Hawaiian ranch for a picnic dinner. Continue to the Big Island's tallest peak for sunset, then use powerful telescopes to observe constellations from Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. Hear commentary from your guide, and keep warm with the provided jackets and hot chocolate.

You should definitely stop here on your way to the beach. There is ample parking, fast and friendly service, and what I loved is the stunning grounds and outdoor dining areas!

Make sure you hit this spot up on your way to the Volcano National Park. You literally drive right past it. Get there early to avoid the crowd! They also have delicious coffees.

We grabbed a quick lunch here to take to Punalu’u black sand beach. I am not a huge sandwich fan, but the bread on this turkey sandwich was amazing!!! Made in the bakery and not to be missed. The malasadas were great - we had Haupia filled and Taro. Awesome take and eat beach food. We stopped here 2 times. Coffee is wonderful as well.

Punalu'u Bake Shop is really the southern most USA bakery — and a mandatory stop whenever we’re traveling to this part of the Big Island :)). They’re famous for their malasadas, pastries, and sweet breads... there’s nice covered tables outside to enjoy your ono-licious selections too. Be sure to visit before the late afternoon as they often sell out of yummies by then... enjoy!

Fantastic sandwiches, pastry and other sweets. It's on the road heading to Volcanoes National Park from the south. There can be a wait at times but it's worth it and even the big lines move pretty fast. There is also plenty of seating outside to eat and take a break if you've come from the Kona area to visit the park. They also make their own bread, which we can say was perfect fro french toast.
