We hiked to the green sand beach along some of the most beautiful coastline you will find anywhere. And met a nice guy from Australia to visit with on the 3 mile hike. The water and beach are stunning. Decided to pay the local 4x4...More

There are only maybe 4 green sand beaches in the world. If you have the opportunity to go to this beach, you simply must! The ride out to the beach and cliff area is rough. Don't fool yourself, your rental car will NOT make it....More

If you like to walk through a bit of rough terrain with a beautiful view then this is a great place to be. Be ready prepared and take water and comfy shoes. The walk is 3 miles and if even in good shape it can...More

Awesome to see - less green than you would imagine, but worth the trek. Most car rental companies will not allow you to drive all the way there......and you also have to cross private land, and it is a VERY rutted dirt road. Drive until...More

Huge ruts in the dirt road as high as your car. You park your car at the parking lot. There are 18 shuttle drivers that you can pick from to take you to the cliff green sand. Its a very rough ride but fun. The...More

This was one of the places I really wanted to go on our recent trip, and I made it within about a mile and a half an hour before sundown, and only learned at that point that it was four wheel drive required. There are...More

It's a bit of a hike (not technically difficult, just long and hot), but definitely worth it. The scenery was lovely and the sand was very interesting... the sun plays tricks, so to me it looked green from a distance, and a metallic gold color...More

The Big Island of Hawaii is a unique Hawaiian vacation. Unlike any of the other Islands I have been to; Oahu, Kauai, Maui. If you stay in Kona it is more populated and has some more shopping opportunities, Hilo is more like Honolulu in population...More

Not a difficult walk, but long and hot with no good place to sit and rest. Young and Fit: Bring water, wear sunscreen/hat sunglasses. Everyone else take the $20 truck ride. The ride is off roading and you must stand in the truck bed. Grandparents...More

They will approach you on the parking area. I think the hike itself added to the experience though and I wouldn't pay for the ride personally. I would suggest being sunscreens up as it's very windy and you don't realize... More

I wouldn't cliff jump unless you have snorkeld the water to check for depth or rock spires. And don't swim these waters without lifeguard present....several people drown per day in Hawaii....and good swimmers too... More

Are the "locals" just waiting at the entrance to give the rides to the South Point, and do they wait for us for the ride back? Do they tell you what they charge? We are over 70 and just want picture of the South Point and maybe to walk on the green sand beach. Thanks

Yes, locals are there waiting when you drive in. We paid $15 per person. Ask them to be in the cab, otherwise you're in the box of the truck. It's very windy out there, wear close toed shoes too. Enjoy!!
