Consider taking the time to visit South Point as you make the southern circle tour of the Big Island. Walk all the way out to the light. Enjoy the incredible views of the open Pacific on clear days and feel the brisk winds from across the ocean. Take a few minutes to talk to the local fishermen and learn about the extraordinary way they 'cast' their lines out to the deep water. Over the past few years, young trill seekers have added diving from the cliffs to their South Point stop. Nearby Green Sand Beach is also a worthwhile side trip.

The southernmost point in the U.S. is certainly a great goal in itself, but the trip is worthwhile too. The terrain is mostly flat from the road that circles the island. Once you get near the bottom, you need to walk a bit to get to the Ka Lae Light. The waves crash into cliffs (where people jump) and rocks at the most southerly point. You can turn your back on the rest of the country and enjoy the ocean view.

We made the 12 mile drive off the main highway to see South Point and it was so worth it - breathtaking views of the coast and crystal clear water below the cliffs. There was no one jumping when we were there but lots of fishermen who were friendly...lots of history here. We were on out way to the Volcano Park so didn't stay as long as I would have liked to.

If you are at the Green Sand Beach or the cliff jumping be sure to stop at the light. The light is not that big of a deal but the views are. And you are at the southern most part of the U.S.A.

Breathtaking and a must see when in Big Island. Not suitable for kids. Best seen in a sunny day. Close to Punalu'u Beach.
