Ditto on all the positive comments and definitely a highlight for mushroom lovers.
An easy tour for people with mobility concerns - no climbing, multiple seat choices, 90% indoors on flat ground. Host Kenta highly responsible for smooth tour with his attentiveness to audience, knowledge and relaxed delivery. We arrived early to do our purchases first. The 0930 tour had 3 adults and 4 young children; our 1130 tour had 19 adults/teens. Kenta was at ease with both size groups.

The majority of the farm is within a state of the art temperature control facility without stairs so handicap access is no problem and weather is not an issue. The farm grows specialty, gourmet mushrooms amongst a little Hawaiian town called Laupahoehoe. If you find the train museum, this farm is the next road over, less than a mile away. Greeter guide was friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. I liked the information we received, on how these mushrooms are grown, the difference between these wood decomposing gourmet mushrooms versus the manure composting mushrooms (buttons) that I was more familiar with . I don't think I will ever eat a button mushroom again. I was intrigued with the health benefits too, and the ease in which to prep and cook the mushrooms. We had a tasting, where we learned how to slice, season and cook these freshly harvested mushrooms. The gift shop was amazing besides fresh & dried mushrooms, there was also mushroom cookies, lavosh, chips, tea, chocolate and soaps to live the "mushroom lifestyle" that we learned while on tour. It was well worth the price, and lasted about 80 minutes. I also liked that the farm collaborates with many island businesses to "include rather than compete" against them. Good model.

This tour is educational and easy to understand concerning the challenges of farming, growing, selling, cooking, and eating these mushrooms. Learning about the famous Alii mushrooms is fun for all ages, locals and visitors, and experts or not in cooking. A chef from Maui even joined our close-up tour, which is a testament to this mushroom that is famous all over Hawaii! This Alii mushroom is also called King Oyster mushroom on the mainland.

Pros: the tour guide Jane was absolutely wonderful and the process was fascinating.
Cons: they are simply charging way to much for this tour. At our scheduled time, everything was already shut down and the harvest has been completed for the day. You generally want to see the operation in action when you go on a farm tour. 60% of the tour was sitting and watching a video. Tours should only be scheduled when the machines are running. I understand that most of the farm cannot be contaminated by letting tourists in, but then the price should reflect that. I think this would be a great tour overall if it was at the $5-$10 price mark (we paid $20 per person). We will not be recommending this to friends and family until the price changes.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour (it ended up just being two of us) with our guide Kenta. There was lots of interesting information, great to see the growing mushrooms and some very tasty samples at the end. Kenta was very friendly and answered our many questions about mushrooms growing!

We have been to the islands many times and had these mushrooms on several restaurant menus. They are meaty and delicious, so we were interested in learning how they were grown. We got what we wanted and more. Other reviews have documented the details of the tour, so I won't repeat that. However, I want to note how useful it was to learn the various ways these mushrooms could be cut and prepared (sliced in coins, shredded like beef, cored and stuffed, etc.). And I have been washing mushrooms all my life, only to learn that I should not do that with any mushroom. The prep info was worth the price of admission. It was interesting to know about the trial and error it took to learn how to successfully grow these mushrooms.

DEFINITELY WORTH A VISIT: Kenta was our presenter & guide for the Hamakua Mushrooms tour we took on 3/24/2016. He was knowledgeable, articulate, professional, friendly and enthusiastic. He listened to our comments and questions without interrupting us and gave us thorough answers. Every one of the employees that we met during the tour was enthusiastic and friendly. Kenta introduced us to most of the employees we met before explaining what each did. When we were introduced to the owner, Bob Stanga, he stopped working on a piece of production equipment in order to give us his complete attention.
We learned the ins-and-outs of how this ecological, green business came to be as well details about how they made decisions about their current product line. We were impressed with the meticulous nature in which they produced their mushrooms. It was well worth the tour fee for this in-depth look into a small business. We enjoyed their delicious Ali'i mushrooms both during the tour and afterwards at home! The only bad news is that their mushrooms are only available on the Hawaii Islands!
We sampled the mushrooms in a soba noodle vegetable salad from Papa'aloa Country Store, just three minutes away. Delicious!

Great tour, educational and fun. Go early in vacation so you can purchase mushrooms and try them out. Sold locally which is an added benefit for those of us who live on island. Location perfect for those who want to visit/tour east side of island. We drove from Kona and made a day of it.
