Beautiful place! Go during the week and you have it almost to yourself! Waves crashing on the lava rocks, spraying water in the air;white foam receding. Cool tradewinds blow the mist in your face. Then turn around to the majestic lush mountainside.
And we saw whales breaching about a quarter mile off shore! Man did they put on a show for us!

Definitely worth a short drive off Route 19 to see this little gem. Crashing waves on the jagged volcanic rocks delighted the small group of tourists gathered there. A beautiful location!

We always stop here, always love the drive down & the big waves and wind at the beach area. You can read the memorial to the schoolchildren, it is touching. For present-day visitors, it's a spot to stop for 30-40 minutes (total of 60 min including driving down) to admire the heavy surf and the interesting lava rock beach formations, maybe some local fisherman culture going on, or local culture of picnics in the park, use the restrooms, and go on your way. In a pinch you can do some laying or sitting around on the beach area and go in the water, but it's not sand it is rock and not exceedingly comfortable. Overall it's a refreshing spot with a good energy level to it, somehow it makes you want to go back as soon as you have left it.

Despite being a state park, this felt more like a local gem verses a tourist-y area. We spent hours here climbing out over the rocks, watching the waves, and exploring tide pools. It's absolutely gorgeous. This is not your typical sand beach, if that's what you're looking for, but it's a nice change of pace.
If you like bouldering or scrambling, I'd leave the flip flops behind and go for sturdy shoes (that will likely get wet).
Pavilions, restrooms, and camp sites can be found here.
No lifeguards on duty.

We had some time before a planned tour and stopped off at Laupahoehoe Park. It was a really pretty spot with such great contrast between the blue ocean, white waves, black lava rocks and greenery at the edge of the park.
Has some picnic tables and paved area were we saw kids on scooters enjoying the day. Not a sandy beach. We saw people climbing on the rocks and people exploring tide pools but it doesn't seem like a beach for swimming.

For every packed tourist attraction you find that has been ruined by tourism, at least there is a place like this. Free. Bathrooms. Great picnic areas and camping areas. Plenty of parking. Amazing views and a small trail along the coast. Plus viewing relics from WWII. We looked around and saw where we think guns were attached on the shoreline. Plus the big military landing spot. Very beautiful.

We happened upon this lovely park on our way from Hilo to Waimea. The drive down to the beach at sea level is slow and windy so just take your time. Once you get down to the beach it is a perfect place to relax and unwind with many shady spots. This area was once a splendid fishing village, but it has a tragic history that is respectively immoralized in the park. In 1946 after an earthquake in Alaska, tsunami waves hit this area as well as Hilo. In this location alone, 21 school children and 3 teachers lost their lives. It is so stricking to read about this at the site seeing the area where it all happened.

We traveled across the island pre-dawn. Make sure you enter the Beach park as your location on Google Maps. Once we arrived we were treated to an amazing sunrise. The park has interesting lava rocks rising out of the ocean. Would definitely recommend going to this beach park if you're visiting the Big Island!

This is a great place to take photos with wave action. The seas weren't that rough but we got some good splash on the photos. Not really a bustling place but we had fun exploring tide pools and watching the waves.

Beautiful park with great views of the cliffs, lava rocks and the ocean. The water looks glacier blue when it's near the lava rocks!
Aside from the spectacular nature, there is a lot of parking, a large grassy field perfect for playing and having a picnic, and two different bathroom/shower stations.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone that will be in the area.

Lapahoehoe is a small "village" or town. There are no hotels or condo's there but there may be some bed and breakfast places or you may want to check Air B&B. It's not that far from Hilo where accommodations are more plentiful.
