I took my family of 5, including 3 kids ages 9-13 out to snorkel the bay. The guys at Ehu & Kai were fantastic. We rented a 3 seater and a 2 seater. The kayaking is not too strenuous, but I would say, make sure you're in somewhat decent physical shape, the winds can really work against you. They'll give you dry bags, but don't over think this, a few snacks, water, sunscreen, that's about all you'll need. They have snorkel gear, or being your own. My final piece of advice, go early, like first thing, 7am and beat the tour boats. We got in our kayaks at 9am and reached the snorkel spot just in time to be joined by a snorkel tour boat with at least 100 or more people, totally ruined snorkeling. People were jumping off the boat in to the water, cannonball style, fish were long gone in the little bay beat the monument. Also, pay attention to instructions on where to turn in when coming back so you don't end up going down the coast too far. Ehu & Kai's location is prime access to the water, no hauling a kayak on your rental car. Don't scrimp with a Groupon for somewhere else, you'll end up hauling your boat from your car and you'll be grumpy by the time you reach the water!! :-) Have fun, you're on Hawaii after all!!!

Aloha, Thank you so much for your awesome review! We are thrilled we were able to accommodate your family of five and give you a five-star experience. Like you said, the earlier the better. Some of the tour boats bring in larger crowds, that can definitely take away the peacefulness of the bay. We are looking forward to seeing you again in the future! Mahalo, Kapii

Our family of 2 kids and 2 adults rented 2 double kayaks to paddle over to Captain Cook. We called 2 day prior to get information and we talked to Uncle Peter, the owner. He was very friendly and helpful. We decided to rent from them due to their price and easy access right on the water so we did not need to load/ unload the kayak from the car.

It was our first-time kayaking and Jamal was patience, informative, and friendly when answering to all our questions such as safety, how to get on/off the kayak, how to paddle, or best places to snorkel. We were able to borrow their dry bag and net bags to kept our stuff. Their kayaks are in very good condition. They also allowed us to use their kayak the whole day until Sunset, although we only use it for about 5 hours.

It was about 20 minutes kayak to get to Captain Cook. We felt safe kayaking the whole time. It was such a great experience with the kayak and great snorkeling. We are really recommending this company to everyone.

Aloha, We are so happy you had a great experience with us! It is definitely a little stressful and challenging hauling a massive vessel on your roof down a windy hill, so we are thrilled we are able to give our guest the convenience of launching right on the water. We appreciate you for taking the time to write this five star review! Mahalo nui, Kapii

We booked our Captain Cook Monument Kayak rental on line for 8am and they were waiting for us when we arrived at 7:45. The orientation was great with instruction on how to get into the kayak in water and navigational landmarks. The staff were super nice, answered all our questions and really gave us exceptional service. This is a great company and I would highly recommend using them. The trip to Captain Cook Monument was shorter than I thought. It took us about 20 minutes each way. I would highly recommend booking for 7am or 8am pickup as you will beat the crowds and have to contend with very few other snorkelers at that time. About 9am is when everybody starts showing up and it gets crowded.

We love renting kayaks from these guys because it's so easy. Book online and follow their directions to the launch site where they will have all your gear ready to go. We like to book early morning so we beat the big boats and crowds to Capt. Cook and this time was no different. We saw tons of dolphin activity on our way out, they were jumping and spinning all around. When we got to the snorkel grounds we were the first ones there, which was amazing. A couple of hikers soon followed, but we were alone in the water for the whole time we snorkelers. Getting into the boats from the water is a bit tricky but not too bad if you have someone with you that can hold your boat. When were leaving a huge hiking group and 2 tour boats were on their way in so we were happy we got there early. The dolphins were still there on the way back too, but not quite as active and there were many more people crowding in to try to watch them. We had a lot of fun and will hopefully get another chance to rent from them in the future!

We had reserved a double kayak to explore Captain Cook Monument. The day we arrived, the ocean swells were extremely high and we were told that, unless we are very experienced kayakers, they suggested for us to consider another day and to change our plans. We were so impressed with this company and their employees to put our safety before their profit and refund our deposit back while we were still talking to them. Sadly we had to leave the next day and before the ocean waves had calmed down. We will definitely choose this company for their honesty, principles and friendliness should we come back to the island and planning a kayaking trip.

Aloha, Thank you for taking the time to write such an awesome review! This means so much to us. Safety is definitely our number one priority and if the conditions can potentially put our guests in danger, we refuse send them out. We hope to see you in the future and get you out in the bay! Before I begin, let me explain I have never actually gone on Ehu and Kai Adventures. I did however have a kayak rental scheduled for 6/6/21 with a group of friends. The night before our scheduled kayak rental, my friend hit a rock while driving up Mauna Kea just before sunset. This led to a monumental 24 hour ordeal of getting the truck towed off the mountain, getting us off the mountain and back to our Airbnb, and then the following day towing the truck from Hilo to Kona all to the tune of $2000. It was probably the most stress I have been under in my life, and one of the worst experiences of my life.

The morning after the crash, we were hopeful that we could get the truck towed to Kona (it was in Hilo at the time) fairly quick and still have time to pick up our kayak rentals. As we hit roadblock after roadblock, we had to call and reschedule our pickup time at Ehu and Kai, and they had no issue whatsoever with this.

As it got towards 3pm, they called, checking in. I explained the situation, how we had been really looking forward to kayaking at Kealakekua, however with all the mess we were in, there just wasn't a way to make it happen. Ehu and Kai were completely understanding and sympathetic. They even offered to hold the kayaks so we could pick them up the following day. When I explained we were flying out at 8am the following morning, they gave me a full refund on the spot for the rentals. I was absolutely shocked. After a day full of stress, pain, and setback, to be given this generosity out of nowhere gave me a huge wave of relief and was the one singular moment of happiness I had that day. I honestly cannot think of another company that would have treated us as compassionately as they did.

I have never sailed under Ehu and Kai, however after experiencing their kindness firsthand, I would never sail under any other kayaking company besides them.

My partner and I did the morning kayak and it was amazing. The guys were super helpful and nice! They explained it all and we were on the way! We saw a pod of dolphins and snorkelled with them. Top 3 moments of my life! I recommended getting out right at 7am so you’re out there alone before the tour groups come. Would recommend to anyone looking to enjoy the morning water and snorkel at captain cook without the crowds. So happy we did this!!

We hope to see you again in the future! Mahalo nui, Kapii

We rented two double kayaks (parents and kids - must be age 5+). Paul helped us to get set up. He had many customers at once but got everyone prepared with gear and information and in the water. He was very friendly and especially kind to my 5 year old, and made sure she had a small paddle too. He was wearing a mask and they were sanitizing the boats, paddles and vests after use. It was SO FUN and I should mention the pod of spinner dolphins that was touring around the bay and right by our kayaks!

Aloha, We are so happy your family had an amazing time with us in Kealakekua Bay. Not sure if you meant Peter or Jamal, but they are both great and always give incredible service to all of our guests. Dolphins are never a guarantee but we are thrilled you folks were able to see some! It's pretty incredible to see them in their natural habitat. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your adventure in Hawaii! Mahalo, Kapii

My family of 6 rented 2 triple kayaks from Ehu and Kai. Their location alone deserves 5 stars; super convenient and right on the bay. They are about a 1.5 mile paddle to the Captain Cook monument. My kids and I did the paddle in 20 minutes. There are 3 ways to get to the monument; hike, boat tour, or kayak. If you are down for a bit of an adventure then renting a kayak is the way to go. Your time is flexible and you can spend more time snorkeling and exploring in the bay. We arrived a bit late from our scheduled rental and we can tell that the gentleman running the rental stand at the small canopy area was swamped, but he was gracious and trying his best to get everyone in and out of the water by himself. The equipment was solid and they provided us with mesh bags for our snorkel gear and a dry bag.

One should take note; we did this same trip many years ago and back then there were no regulations about pulling your kayak on shore once you get to the monument. Now kayaks and those using them are not allowed on the land AT ALL. We had to float around and stay attached to the kayaks while we were snorkeling near the monument. Those hiking and on boat tours are allowed on land and on the shoreline. Why? I have no idea, we were just told by Ehu and Kai that we should stay either in the kayak or in the water at all times. This does not deter me from using Ehu and Kai in the future to do this same trip, but definitely helpful to know if you plan to venture to the monument via kayak.

All in all, renting from Ehu and Kai was easy and convenient. Highly recommended!

Ehu and Kai adventures was everything we hoped: They set us up quickly, safely, and economically (we rented a 2 person kayak, and it was a great deal). It took only minutes to get set up once we arrived. They gave us a few tips and safety advice, and we were off. We are two nearly 60 year old women who kayak on lakes in California, and we felt comfortable. One of us snorkled; the other was a little hesitant since she's not great at getting back in the kayak from water. We would definitely rent from Ehu and Kai again in a heartbeat. Highly recommend (note: there is no restroom at the launch site.)
