I went for a two tank shore dive with Dive Puako. My other family member wasn't feeling up for diving, so Richard just took me (and only charged for me!), no problem. We did a good individualized briefing of the dive plan and he made sure it was a great match to my abilities and preferences. During the dives, Richard found and pointed out a large collection of sea creatures. We did the dive at my pace, which was great. Puako Reef is top notch, with an abundance of features including swim-through lava tunnels (the ones we went through were short, safe, and fun). In summary I got a private tour from a top expert guide at the same price as a large group would be anywhere else.

Richard took my son out scuba diving while my daughter and I snorkeled from the shore. We had communicated with him by e-mail prior to the trip. He was excellent to deal with and knew the best areas to dive from shore. After the trip, he e-mailed photos that he had taken of us diving with his professional camera---- an unexpected bonus at no extra charge. Overall a great experience! Highly recommended.

I had an excellent time diving with Richard! The vibe was very low key, relaxing, yet professional. It was a true VIP experience with all gear provided onsite and ready to go. I appreciated Richard's thoughtfulness around ensuring that my dive partner and I felt like we were on vacation. It was so convenient to put on our gear and take a tiny walk to the dive entrance. As soon as we walked in there were fish and turtles! We saw so much sea life; it was great! Double bonus: Richard provided us with exceptional photos of everything we had seen! If you want a carefree, safe, fun, and fish filled dive, choose Dive Puako!

Absolutely awesome shore dives with Richard. I was recently on a 3 week trip to the Big Island, and spent most days underwater exploring various sites on the west coast. When my buddy left for the mainland on the 3rd week, I got in touch with Richard for one day of guided touring - hoping to spot and photograph some of the marine life I was on the hunt for. With it being just myself and Richard, the dive was entirely catered around what I was hoping to see -- as an underwater photographer, I typically will move at a very slow pace, carefully scanning areas and Richard was happy to oblige and hunt for the little stuff. This is generally not the kind of experience you'll get on a dive boat that caters to larger groups of various skill levels, so I really appreciated the approach here. Richard is in the water all the time around Puako, and really knows the various sites here - including where some of the rarer critters like to hide out. We saw tons of nudibranchs (gold lace, tom smith's, scrambled egg, rosy phyllidia, white margin, strawberry), fuscia flatworm, shaggy sponge crab, giant harry yellow hermit crab, titan scorpionfish, slipper and spiny lobsters, the turtle cleaning station, etc. My only regret is that I didn't contact him sooner in my trip, and that he was unavailable the last few days I could dive the Big Island. My success rate for finding and photographing the more interesting underwater critters really increased with him guiding.

The dive sites - awesome Hawaiian lava structures with plenty of caves and swim throughs. Plenty of micro fauna and an abundance of turtles and reef fish. The guide - Richard was a really nice bloke who clearly enjoys his diving. His local knowledge and ability to tailor the dive based on my preferences was impressive. The service - picked up at the front door, driven to the sites, fitted out in good quality gear and provided with photos online afterwards. Absolutely no complaints.
