Although I live near Waimea, I made my first visit to Anna Ranch today. I always appreciate its Hawaiian heritage when I pass (which is often, en route to the grocery store or post office), and particularly treasure its poinsettia hedge which blooms gloriously each winter, in its prime around the Christmas holidays.

Visiting the rooms of the ranch house and touring the property offered a memorable experience of genuine local history, and I definitely will return with my guests when our visitor season arrives. Anna Ranch offers a glimpse of paniolo life in old Hawaii. The ranch has operated since the early 19th century, but was made famous by Anna Perry-Fiske (née Anna Leialoha Lindsey). Anna (1900-1995) is a venerable institution in Waimea. She created a successful ranch (her childhood home) after her parents died in 1939. Performing all of the duties of the ranch, she worked to pay off debts, improve the ranch, and become a noted benefactor to the community. A founder and major donor of Hawai'i Preparatory Academy (HPA), Anna contributed the proceeds from her "Old Hawai'i on Horseback" shows to the Hawaii American Heart Association chapter. In 1983, she was named its most generous individual donor.

The ranch house has been restored to 1939 condition (the year Anna took over the ranch) and contains ancient Hawaiian artifacts that have been found on site, and the possessions of at least three generations. Anna's dining table, her parents' dining table, and her grandparents' dining table were all put to regular use in Anna's fundraising efforts. Learning about Anna was fascinating, as was viewing the tools, saddles, clothing, living rooms, outstanding collection of koa (furniture, bowls, other implements), china, art, victorian furniture and more. The outbuildings reflect the working ranch, and house a saddle maker and a blacksmith. The gift shop sells items made on the ranch.

I haven't even mentioned the ranch's breathtaking setting. If you're interested in all aspects of Hawaiian history, it's not to be missed. Regardless, it's well worth a visit!

This is a beautiful, very well kept ranch as it is a National and Historic home site of Hawaiian culture.
Learn all about Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske and what she brought to our island.
She is known as "The first Lady of Ranching in Hawaii".

A great horseman, she brought so much more to ranching here on the island.
Your education of this great island will be truly enhanced and your knowledge of ranching vastly interesting. We had the first true cowboys here. Paniolos rode all the ranches and taught many generations their trade.
You will love Anna's Ranch.

Just did a walk around the grounds along a path with nice markers. The text often gave legend background on different aspects. It is a quick stop, but the house can be toured with a guide on some days. The site is next to the mountain, and quite pretty.

Our book club read Hawaii's Incredible Anna and then had a tour of Anna Ranch. it was interesting to see their home, especially since many artifacts from their lives together are on display. The docent was excellent.

I have now taken this tour twice and I am so impressed with the Ranch and the Tour. It is so rare that you get such tremendous insight into a time and place. Both times the Tour Guides were very personable and informative. Anna was quite an unusual person and you can really get a "feel" for her life by touring the home that she lived in for 95 years. Take this tour!

This old ranch home is full of antiques, surrounded by lovely gardens. The tour is about an hour long. I was given the tour by Kim who was a wealth of information. She even shared the old music box that still works. Anna Lindsey Perry Fiske was an incredible cowgirl and truly the grand dame of Waimea.

My husband and I had the opportunity to visit Anna's Ranch Heritage Center, it was a beautiful place with lots of very interesting history of the first ranchers in Hawaii. What an incredible person Anna was! Unfortunately, we went to this location when they were NOT giving tours we would have loved to take the the tour instead we walked the grounds and read about the history ourselves.

Along with being a historical site, the ranch is well manicured and a joy to walk thru. It truly feels like walking in Old Hawaii. Breezy with views of the Kohala Mountains makes this place worth the stop. It was rewarding to learn about Anna and the ranch history.
