About
Ride with us as we journey into Waipi'o Valley, one of the most beloved and revered places in all Hawai'i. Be amazed by the majestic scenery and beauty of the valley as our sure footed horses take you over lush jungle trails, under flowering canopies and through curving streams. You will be captivated by cascading waterfalls, 3,000 foot shear cliffs, farmlands and wild horses. Sample rare fruit from our family farm and see Hawai'i's staple food crop, Kalo, grown in the valley since ancient times. We embark on this 3 hour tour twice daily Monday -Saturday at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. Participants meet at WOH Ranch located on Highway 240 after mile marker 7. From there we shuttle guests down into the valley to our stables where riders will receive a safety demonstration. Once in the saddle, the trek takes a leisurely pace allowing riders to appreciate an unforgettable perspective of Waipi'o's beauty. Our local guides share the legends, history and plants of this rich cultural landscape.

My husband and daughter and I went on a 2.5-hour ride with two excellent guides and just two other guests. It was really informative and the views throughout the property are spectacular. We also got to see some of the cattle and sheep on the ranch and we ate tropical fruits straight from the trees. During the ride, it started pouring and our guide Alex quickly distributed ponchos for everyone who wanted one. We felt very safe and the horses were gentle and reasonably well-behaved, especially the ones chosen for the less experienced riders. My horse had some spirit but I was easily able to handle him and I'm at best an intermediate rider. Overall, it was a great experience and I'm glad we drove up from the Kona area to spend the day with WOH!

This horseback riding encounter was a magical experience! The guides, Cecil and Tracy, were both so knowledgeable because they were both born and raised in the Valley. They shared their experiences of growing up in Waipi"o Valley and their love and knowledge of horses, the culture, and vegetation.
The day we went it was intermittently pouring down rain and windy. The guides made sure we were safe, and still enjoyed the experience on horseback. We couldn't cross the river to the actual ranch, so Cecil waded across the water and returned with horses a few at a time along with human and dog helpers, while Tracy gave us a tutorial.
The ride was fun and the horses were wonderful! The views of the valley and waterfalls were spectacular. Even though we couldn't go as far due to rising water, I would still recommend Waipi'o on Horseback.
The trip from the top of the Valley to the bottom was an adventure on it's own especially with the commentary from the guides. When we returned back to our starting location Cecil took extra time to show us certain fruit plants and flowering plants on the property.

This was such a fun way to spend the afternoon. And the perfect compromise to explore the Waipi'o valley without having to hike in/out of the valley. Neither of us had ridden horses in the last decade, but we had no trouble at all. We appreciated that there was a guide at the front and back of the line at all times - not just to help navigate our horses, but to give us awesome info on the valley (our guides really were excellent). Note that you aren't riding for the full time as you drive in/out of the valley and then ride around once you get to the valley floor, but we found this to be the perfect amount of time for inexperienced rides like ourselves. We also enjoyed sampling the fresh lilikoi and starfruit found on our journey!

The guides were informative and fairly friendly. What I was disappointed with is it's just a ride around their property. Nice but not spectacular. Also be aware that although the time period listed is 9:30-12:30 the ride only went for 2 hours. This is a nose to tail ride format. We felt gyped and at their rates this was an extremely expensive horse back ride. Seemed wrong .Tthey should make this more clear. If we'd known it was not what was listed we would've choosen some place cheaper. Also I had a 10 year old with me and a man on the ride who was extremely talkative was using foul language and the guide closest to her didn't stop it. I was further back and din't hear the man. She was upset he was talking that way and she had to hear it.

Due to the road closure into the valley we just rode around the ranch. Not a particular thrilling ride, but we enjoy riding horses on vacations so it was OK. We never saw the valley. It was billed as a ride from 9:30 AM to 12:30. The 4 of us started at 9:30 getting instructions and mounting our horses. That should have been at 9:15 or earlier so we could get riding at 9:30. And our guide's horse had a limp so he had to change mounts. So with all that we spent 30 minutes of really not riding anywhere and maybe started around 10 AM. Our guide also was riding ahead of us and we really could not hear what he was talking about. We felt the guide kept riding ahead to keep our horses moving so he could get it over with. And to top it off we were back before NOON. So under 2 hours of actual riding, maybe an hour and 45 minutes. So our expectations were high but the delivery was very, very disappointing. We would consider doing it again if the road is open but this ride was not worth the money and should have been deeply discounted. We cannot recommend it.

Stacy and Cicel were our guides to the valley. Both residents of the valley who grew up there, these horse loving people treated us with so much kindness and joy. Our family of 4 (with 2 teen boys) had so much thrill and fun riding in their 4x4 van down and up the STEEP and narrow windy road. The scenery with the coastline, lush valley greens and vegetations were amazing. We stopped by and fed the wild horses bananas. Then crossed multiple big streams in the van! The horse riding part was full of adventure as well, the horses were tame but also have their characters. 3 out of 4 of us were not experienced with horse back riding at all but the pace was slow and we all felt safe. Overall, 1 of my top 3 activities for the Big Island. Highly recommend!

My 10-year-old and I went on the 2.5-hour horseback ride this week. We were treated to samples of a variety of fruits that are grown right there on the farm while we waited for the other riders to arrive. Micah gave good directions to the whole group of riders about how to control our horses, and then off we went up the side of the hill. We passed through a big variety of views, and saw a ton of other animals who live on the acreage. The view of the ocean and lush landscape from the top of the mountain was superb. Staff were very kind and helpful to my daughter when her legs were uncomfortable, and the three of them accompanied all of us riders the whole time, keeping us safe and telling us things about the ranch as we rode. I really enjoyed this entire experience!

Check in at the ranch bordered on unprofessional and charming. No one asked for our names or directed us to sign their waivers, they just took a head count and we loaded into the van. Tracie and Cecil were friendly and knowledgeable about Waipio's history and their horses. The ride was relaxing and T&C were confident riders and instructors. Tracie's driving skills were impressive and she was most kind and courteous to tourists and locals. Next time we'll try their atv ride!

Pretty brief but pleasant ride (1hr or so) with pleasant and helpful hosts. WOH seems like an offshoot of the farm it’s based on; less horse people, more farmers. The van ride into and out of the valley is worth the price.

Our family was just blown away by the amazing experience with Waipi’o on Horseback! We had a fun, lifetime memory. The gorgeous vistas and friendly, knowledgeable and helpful guides made this just a perfect experience. We would do this again in a heartbeat. Our children are 15 and 12 and keep talking about this experience non stop. It was magical!
Thank you to the wonderful team there.
