Description:

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in...

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o Valley. Our small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii.

This trek takes a leisurely pace. Our guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. See one of Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps feed our local community.

We meet at the WOH Barn located 7-1/2 miles toward Waipio from Honokaa. Riders travel via four-wheel drive vehicle into Waipi'o Valley-ancient Hawaii's "Valley of the Kings." We depart from the WOH Barn at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. The trail ride begins on the valley floor. Then a four-wheel drive vehicle takes the riders out of the valley and drops them off back at the WOH Barn.

A minimum of two and a maximum of fourteen riders are allowed on each excursion. Refunds are given on cancellations received in our office 24 hours or more in advance of the reserved ride time.

Because of our remote location, reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Weather plays a vital role in this tour's operation and can change rapidly. In case of hard rain or flood conditions, this tour is subject to cancellation. We will give as much advance warning as soon as possible in these situations.

This is a unique and active tour. We recommend guests be agile and in good health. We suggest pants and covered shoes. Children under twelve years of age will be accepted if they are with a responsible adult or are experienced riders.

Where to start? Our guides Sarah and Dave obviously love what they do. They were engaging and knowledgeable of Hawaiian history as well as the culture of the area. The horses were beautifully cared for and obviously loved. The had the sheen of someone's personal and spoiled horse. The scenery and ride, could not have been more beautiful. Crossed many... More

Perhaps my expectations were too high but I was disappointed in the Waipi'o on Horseback tour. I'll start with the positives: the valley is green, lush and beautiful, the driver was careful on the steep descent, and the horses didn't have to wear bits. Negatives: 1) Their website states "guests will experience epic views of Waipiʻo's one mile long black... More

The ride was good. It was on dirt roads, not trails though. The valley is beautiful and the horses add to the pleasure of viewing the scenery. The horses themselves are well taken care of, beautiful, and calm. The guides are very personable, too.

I went on this ride several years ago and his time I brought my husband, my son and his wife. We all agreed that from the moment we jumped in the van with our guide Sarah to the end of the ride, it was clear that the highlight of our 9 days on The Big Island was going to be... More

I can't recommend this enough! If you are on the big island visiting you HAVE to make a reservation! Our guides were extremely knowledgable of the valley and we're happy to answer any questions we had. The horses were obviously very well looked after and their temperaments were perfect for experienced and novice riders alike. The views in the valley... More

This is an amazing horseback riding adventure. Our daughters (ages 14 & 8) loved it. The Wrangler (tour guide) Sarah was awesome. Sarah was so great with the kids, she was funny, and full of history of the valley. The ride in the van down the hill into the valley was a thrill. This is how you get up and... More

This is a unique "must do" event when on the Big Island. The views are out of this world! Large waterfalls, pristine riverbeds, great horseback riding with a wonderful staff. We will be back in the future...
