Description:

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in...

Waipio On Horseback offers special guided excursions on horseback in secluded Waipi'o Valley. Our small groups savor the charm of this 2 1/2 hour adventure in old Hawaii.

This trek takes a leisurely pace. Our guides narrate throughout the ride, explaining the history, legends and facts of life in the valley. The path meanders through lush jungle trails along the hillside; through streams and rivers; and on to ancient Hawaiian villages. Riders see dramatic 1,200-foot waterfalls, taro patches, lotus ponds, wild horses, exotic flowers, plants, native trees and birds. See one of Hawaii's oldest forms of farming that produces taro, a Hawaiian staple that helps feed our local community.

We meet at the WOH Barn located 7-1/2 miles toward Waipio from Honokaa. Riders travel via four-wheel drive vehicle into Waipi'o Valley-ancient Hawaii's "Valley of the Kings." We depart from the WOH Barn at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm daily. The trail ride begins on the valley floor. Then a four-wheel drive vehicle takes the riders out of the valley and drops them off back at the WOH Barn.

A minimum of two and a maximum of fourteen riders are allowed on each excursion. Refunds are given on cancellations received in our office 24 hours or more in advance of the reserved ride time.

Because of our remote location, reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Weather plays a vital role in this tour's operation and can change rapidly. In case of hard rain or flood conditions, this tour is subject to cancellation. We will give as much advance warning as soon as possible in these situations.

This is a unique and active tour. We recommend guests be agile and in good health. We suggest pants and covered shoes. Children under twelve years of age will be accepted if they are with a responsible adult or are experienced riders.

Our family of 4 had a great time. Seeing the valley from the inside on horses really allowed us to see the true beauty of this place. Our guides, Tracey and Cecil were fun, knowledgable and helpful. Our two kids especially had a great time. This really is a must see and do on the big island.

It was a wonderful experience! For those who do not have a 4WD, Waipi'o On Horseback provides a great opportunity of exploring the valley without having to walk down the steep road into the valley and back up to the parking lot. A shuttle takes the riders down the steep road to the bottom of the valley, while exposing them... More

We went with 2 kids- 12 and 9. Great trek down to the valley floor via 4 wheel drive. Horse were lovely and guides were rich with knowledge and experience. Easy for beginning riders and a secret glimpse into a place rarely seen by tourists.

This was the best trip that we did while on vacation on the Big Island. The guides were great, funny and very helpful. They recommended an amazing farm to table restaurant close to the farm. Have told everyone about this! Must see when you are on the big island.

This is a "must do" whether you are staying in Kona or Hilo--it is worth the drive. We had a hot (not rainy) day. Bugs were not a problem and I wore jeans that went to just below my knee. Bring a camera. This was a different horseback experience as we are not following a trail as much as a... More

Everything was great about this attraction. Great people! The only suggestion I have is that they add a speaker in the van, so passengers in the back can hear the driver. It was hard to make out what the driver was saying.
