We had an excellent time and learned so much about the Valley. The tour was fun, educational and most importantly, taught us about the people and the history. Highly recommended! These folks are natives and live in the valley unlike many of the tours.

This incredible experience was life changing. Makana and Uncle Morgan opened up their homes and shared their daily experiences with my group. We were all so touched by how amazing their life is, and how willing they are to show us the ancient ways. I will be back again for more. They are truly the coolest people I have met. I will do this experience as many times as I can when I visit Hawaii again.

We have been coming to the Big Island for 12 years. The afternoon we spent with Uncle Morgan and Makana has been one of our best experiences ever! They make you feel like Ohana(family) from the moment they pick you up to take you down into the valley. Their knowledge and pride of what they do and interest in sharing this rich Hawaiian heritage allows you to understand how special The Valley of the Kings really is. As you drive through the valley you are greeted by wild horses and other native animals. They take you to their Taro farm. From here, you get on ATV's(they drive) to experience other secluded areas in the valley, including a short walk to a spectacular waterfall. This is not a high adventure ATV ride, although crossing streams and driving down private trails was a lot of fun. We stopped at the banana "drive In" and tasted Cacao and other locally growing fruits. We enjoyed going in the afternoon because they were not in a rush to get back for another tour. The instructions say to bring dry clothes, but we did not get wet from the tour. But we also didn't fall into any streams that we were crossing! Limited to 6 people for each tour at this time, so book early. If you are looking for a authentic and fun Hawaiian cultural experience, you will not be disappointed. We will be back again! He nui ka mahalo. A Hui Hou Kakou!

Morgan and Makana were the perfect hosts! We learned nonstop fro the moment we met, and enjoyed the “behind the scenes tour”of the valley. Wild horses, pigs, and a bevy of fruits, cacao, lilikoi, coffee and ? Respect for the land, and respect for traditions. You can’t ask for a more authentic experience.

From the first planning stages for this trip I wanted to pay a return visit to the Waipio Valley. I didn’t think a horseback ride would be for me this time around and the wagon tour that I’d seen had really bad reviews. There was the ATV “experience” that seemed good and had positive reviews. So, we booked it. And it was worth every penny – and more. Makana, our driver/guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He told us he helped out his uncle, who owned the business – and who also owned a fairly size-able taro farm that suppled a thousand pounds of taro a week to the island. Makana had his own house behind his uncle’s. This all helped in understanding where our guide was coming from and reinforced his knowledge of the Valley of the Kings and of farming there. The “tour,” that was much more and experience than anything else, lasted just over three hours – starting with the rather adventuresome descent into the valley. Makana pointed out a variety of interesting sights and, at one stop, had us sample sweet honeysuckle plucked from a bush. At the farm, he described the process of growing taro and pointed out the differences in plants. Then it was off in the ATV toward the back of the valley. We stopped once so Makana could pick a nice sized cocoa bean and sample the sweetness inside. We then walked a short distance, crossing a stream and arriving at the base of a beautiful waterfall (one of many that flow into the valley). For anyone visiting the Big Island and wanting to experience the Waipio Valley I would highly recommend the Waipio ATV Adventure. You won’t be disappointed.
