This was the fourth time I have gone on a whale watching with Captain Dan. It is a great trip and Captain Dan has been researching whales for 40 years and is very knowledgeable and provides a very informative narrative. We saw several humpback whales. The boat, the Lady Anne, is very stable. The crew is great. Beverages and snacks... More

We saw whales and dolphins on our trip! Beautiful day and calm waters. Our trip was postponed a day because a boat had been hit by a wave and slammed to shore during the storm the night before. No one was hurt:). Captain Dan, Anita and Chris took very good care of us. Capt Dan had great stories and information... More

I've never seen an ad for Captain Dan's tour - he doesn't need to advertise. He's a whale specialist, and his three hour tour is highly educational as well as fun. We've been out with him three times and always learn something new. This isn't a glitzy, cocktails-at-sunset and snorkel with the dolphins tour, but a real sweep of whale... More

I would recommend Captain Dan's trip due to his experience and you can go so much farther than one of the Zodiacs. His crew provide interesting information along the way. We did see whales but picture taking is tough since every passenger is trying to capture the same shot.

We had always wanted to visit the Big Island during the Whale watching season. After thoroughly researching available tours , we chose Capt. Dan McSweeny's out of Honokohau Harbor.Capt. McSweeney has been studying whales and their annual journey back and forth from Alaska , to the Hawaiian Island chain for over 40 years. The conservation and preservation of the whale population... We found a lovely pod of dolphins, but saw nothing else. This was not the Captain's fault; just the way it was. However, it was disappointing. They provide a free certificate to return at some point. We'll wait for next year and hope for more whales.

The journey north to where the whales had been spotted earlier in the day was spectacular - beautiful sunny sky, indigo-colored water, shoreline with beautiful lava flows that could be traced back up the mountainside, boat-size that allowed for personal interaction, and finally...the whales. The staff did a wonderful job sharing their knowledge and were attentive to our needs. Refreshments... More

We heard about this trip in a well known Island Guide book, but the experience was even better than it stated. Captain Dan was incredibly knowledge, found us a playful group of humpbacks and his crew and boat were first rate too!

The whale watching thing and the Captains Story was pretty interesting. The Staff is well trained and helpful. Snapped some good pictures, no breaching, few humpback whales swimming away, the Dolphins were pretty cool too.

Our group of 4 really enjoyed the comfortable boat and knowledgeable Capt. McSweeney. We found whales and learned Soooo much about all kinds of whales and the coastline. He has great stories. We thought the boat was a perfect size and particularly liked being on top deck. Crew was great also. They offered fruit, water or juice, chps, and M&Me.... More
