Many places to find to lay down your towels and soak up some sun. Great for snorkeling and swimming. We headed out towards the mouth where the rocks form a natural barrier to help the area inside stay somewhat calmer. As the tide rose more fish and TURTLES started coming in. One of the best days we had. Very relaxing. Also has a lifeguard for those that prefer to have one. Does set your mind at ease knowing he is there.

This park should be moved to the top of your to-visit list. If possible visit on a weekday as weekends are very crowded. The parking was ample during the week.

Easy to walk around and locals were friendly and welcomed us with advice and suggestions. The water level was low and the turtles were huge. Large number of turtles and visitors did not seem to scare them away.

It was easy to take pictures.

Free! Rarely on vacation do we feel like a free venue was at the top of our favorite memory.

Clean, clear water. Great for snorkeling. Good amount of marine life. We were lucky to have 2 sea turtles join us.

Limited open “beach” area. Has more grass than sand.

Very popular site. Parking is very limited and mostly along the road. We went on a weekday and available spaces nearby were all full.

Carlsmith Beach Park is perennially on the list of the top beaches on the Big Island, and certainly the top beach on the windward (Hilo) side of the island. But it is not really a "beach" at all in that there is no sandy shoreline It is instead a gorgeous lava ringed lagoon with super clear turquoise and emerald water. The lava seawall and breakwater form calm lagoons which are ideal for swimming or snorkeling. There are numerous green sea turtles freely swimming in these waters as well.

I visited Carlsmith Beach Park nearly everyday when I was staying in Hilo during a particularly good stretch of weather in late January. It is a short, 10-minute drive from the hotels along Banyan Drive.

There is limited parking immediately at the beach park, but the adjacent Kealoha Beach Park has more parking. Parking is also possible along the main road.

This is a very interesting place with lots to wander around and see with beautiful viws. We have been here before and seen sea turtles though we didn't get to see any this time. It would be nice to have a few more benches and tables here and there. I appreciate having a lifeguard station. The parking is the main issue, but you find a place where you can. The place is kept up pretty nicely and has some nice features. We had snorkeled before but not this time -- yet there were quite a few people snorkeling.

This is not the best snorkeling but it's a great park to visit and place to hang out and have lunch. Heavily used by locals and sometimes they can be loud and obnoxious. parking was easy. they do have fresh water outdoor shower and bathrooms though.

This is a nice cove for swimming. Everyone there was very friendly. We saw a sea turtle laying out and were able to bring our 2 year old in the water in the cove/pond area. Others saw turtles swimming. I'd suggest bringing a life jacket or swim wings for little ones and leave your shoes along the rocks. There is a short grassy area you can lay out on afterwards, no sand. The water was warm in places and cold in places, but you get used to it.
The parking area from Google Maps has a trail through like a mini rainforest to get there, but it might be easier and safer to find your way walking along the street or parking by the bathrooms if you can. Enjoy!

Very picturesque rocky beach. People fill the grassy areas and it was quite noisy and active with big groups of locals enjoying the day. Saw a few turtles. Water is cold in spots. There are restrooms. Overall a nice beach if visiting Hilo.

Of all the wonderful beach parks along the shore south of Hilo Bay, Carlsmith is our favorite. Great swimming and snorkeling protected in winter by the lava “reef” keeping things calm inside. Lots of nice lawn area too for laying about.

Spent an hour or so snorkeling. The corral is dead from folks walking on it. The water is shallow. I visited in the afternoon so the water wasn’t as clear as it would have been earlier in the day. Saw a couple sea turtles and lots of fish.
