We recently cruised around the Hawaii islands and had no plans for the day. Just outside the gates of the port we found the Hoppa on hoppa off bus. What a find! It covers all parts of the island including the Rainbow waterfall, Blowhole, Candy factory, main town and beaches at a cost of only $20 for the day. There is English commentary on the frequent buses by clear speaking, knowledgable drivers. I'd recommend you do this in order to see the sights of the island at an unbeaten price.

The office is a block or so from the cruise ship terminal. Even still, they pick people up at the pier if you're booked with them. This was a fun day and much cheaper than excursions by the cruise line. Our driver (from Arizona, forgot his name) was friendly and fun. If you do the city tour, it stops at 4 major places in about 2 hours and you can ride their busses the rest of the day if you choose.

My husband and I did this tour about a week ago. They picked us up right from the cruise terminal and took us to their office which is only a few min. away. Check in was easy and we left on time. Sadly I don't remember our driver's name as my husband called him "cousin" a term used a lot in Hawaii, he did a wonderful job and shared lots of information during the ride. Our group had 13 people so a great size not too big. All our stops were timed well we never felt rushed and did everything we wanted to.

Aloha, so glad to hear you had a good day at the National Park, the cousin you are referring to is most likely Aaron who is very knowledgeable about the islands and the Volcano. We will make sure and pass along your comments. Mahalo, Jay

First, this is for the Ultimate Volcano Tour with Hoppa on/Hoppa Off, not the city tour (but I could not choose the volcano activity on this review as there was not a drop down).

Having previously experienced the wonder of Hilo's volcanic landscapes on two occasions, my recent venture into the Ultimate Volcano Tour left me with mixed feelings. While the tour may have been adequate for first-time visitors, it fell disappointingly short of expectations for those seeking an authentic encounter with the awe-inspiring natural wonders of the region.

One of the major letdowns was the promise of walking on ancient lava fields, a feature prominently highlighted in the tour's advertisement. Regrettably, this crucial aspect was notably absent from the itinerary, leaving us yearning for the raw, untamed beauty of the volcanic terrain. The absence of this promised highlight felt like a missed opportunity to immerse visitors in the geological marvels that make Hilo so unique.

Another aspect that contributed to the lackluster experience was the detour to the candy/chocolate store and 'farmers market.' While diversions can add value to a tour, this particular pitstop felt more like a sales gimmick than an enriching part of the volcanic exploration. The promised farmers market resembled more of a swap meet, with a repetitive assortment of goods from tent to tent. This diversion added little to the overall experience and left us wishing for more time to explore the natural wonders we came to witness.

On a positive note, the guide was knowledgeable and shared interesting facts about the region. However, the overall pacing of the tour felt rushed at the volcano, leaving limited time for more time ant the volcano and engagement with the surroundings. A more leisurely approach would have allowed for a deeper appreciation of the volcanic landscapes and their geological significance.

We were coming off the cruise ship. We had an horrible experience, not because of the tour, but because of our seats on the bus. No open windows, the long bus. Bus was packed, we got the last row all the way to the end. NO A/C for us in last row. Nothing the tour guide could do about. All the driver said was “seems like A/C is broken for the back seat”. That’s it. We paid the same amount as anyone else on the bus. We don’t get A/C! We had to put up with being hot, in the dead heat of summer on a packed bus. There is no way of catching any other bus along the way once you’re on, since every single bus was packed. Never again.
Tour company! Fix your bus!!!!!make sure everything is working before getting people on!!!
People, if you get the last row on the long bus without open windows, get off immediately. Wait for next bus. Or you’ll regret it.

Best spots Rainbow falls and lagoons near the beach, great service, driver Jay, stays with you for first 4 stops very knowledgeable. Then jump on or off to suit yourself. Bus Is every 20 mins and pick up / drop right at the cruise terminal, off the ship on the bus perfect!

What a well run business! Buses ran frequently, drivers provided commentary and were open to any and all questions. Located steps from the cruise ship. Visited many sites and because it was hop on hop off, you could decide how long you wanted to stay in each place. Great, friendly staff. Highly recommend!

We were on a cruise and couldn't find any excursions available from the cruise line, so we looked online and found this tour. There were 6 of us and we all enjoyed it! The tour guide (sorry - I forgot his name) was very friendly and knowledgeable about Hilo. I would highly recommend Hoppa On Hopa Off and will definitely look them up in other places!

We did the Volcano National Park tour. Hoppa on office is very easy walk from the cruise ship port. Our driver Aaron was very knowledgeable and friendly. We stopped at several places at VNP, spent about an hour at the farmers market where we had excellent Poke bowls for lunch, visited Rainbow falls and Richardson's Black Sand beach which was amazing, saw several sea turtles there. Aaron had waters, snacks and rain ponchos available for everyone on the bus. We felt this was one of the very best values for our money when comparing all of the excursions we took during the week. Would highly recommend this tour. Also - even though our scheduled departure time was 9:30 am, as soon as they had a full bus - we were on our way. They did not rush us in any way to get back earlier because of this, just made sure we were back in plenty of time before we had to be back on board our cruise ship.

Decided to try this while our cruise ship was in Hilo for the day. Our driver was an older gentleman who made it known multiple times he was descended from royalty on both the Hawaiian and French sides of his family lineage. On the way to the first stop, it was noted the back half of the bus had no A/C so another bus was called to split our group up. This driver went with the new bus group. His headset mic stopped working so we could not hear anything. He was unable to fix the issue so we rode in silence and learned nothing. On the way to the farm market stop, he became very frustrated and dismissive of the questions people were asking him. We hoppa-off at that stop to get away from him. Overall a very disappointing experience and waste of money.
