We were there for a funeral. It was a muggy day and the church had no air conditioning. There were fans on the ceiling and the doors were open for air. It is definitely a historic place to see but very warm.

There's two main churches in town and one kind of out of town. I grew up with this church, sometimes on Wednesdays the school (st. Joseph) will hold their mass here. Very nice to visit when alone.

Since we are practicing Catholics, we attend church every weekend. While we were in Hilo, we attended Mass at St. Joseph. The building is fairly old but somewhat up-to-date. The pews are not what most would consider comfortable, being older wooden seats. There are poor...More

Stopped in for a quick visit while in town to reminisce. Went to SJHS way back when. Wanted to see how much it had changed. The answer is that it hasn't in any easily perceivable way. Still a nice old church with really memorable architecture....More

I attended mass after moving here, trying to find a new home church. I won't be going back. There is nothing bad about anyone that attends, but the singing from the main cantor hurt my ears & I almost started laughing when she started (I...More

Nice old Catholic Church. Services throughout the day , Sunday and also on Saturday night. New style, greeting strangers, engaging strangers after mass. Very pleasant.

Big parish with visitors being made to feel very welcome. Mass times are conducive to complementing other town related activities. People attending the Saturday night mass were invited to leave their cars parked until 9 p.m. while they explored more of the town on foot.

Visitors will be introduced to the congregation and welcomes to join the Catholic service. Ushers will present you with a welcoming lei and local parishioners will chat with you after services.

Cycling around Hilo, I couldn't resist popping in the open door to get a feel for the local church architecture. This is a lovely simple building and testament to the natural ventilation prowess of the Hawaiian designers of old. On a muggy hot day, it...More

We dropped in during one of our many walks. Love the massive beams and construction that I believe is over 150 years old. This church has seen it all and survived earthquakes, wind and rain and the charm remains.
