Richardson Beach is a really pretty park that is free to explore. We were here for a short visit hoping to see some sea turtles and we weren’t disappointed! There was one sleeping on the rocks in the afternoon sun and another in the water along the sea wall.

The beach itself is very different in that it has somewhat sharp black sand/rock because of the lava that is all over the area of course. It is interesting but not comfortable to walk on, so wear water shoes. It may not be the most comfortable place for swimming and sunbathing, but there were plenty of people in the water and enjoying the beach.

The grounds have some beautiful natural pool areas that look like lagoons or almost like golf course water traps! I’ve never seen anything like it before. The birds were just swimming around in there and there were several people fishing and relaxing in the park. It was a great place to spend the day and everyone was very friendly. There are some facilities there, like an outdoor shower and I believe there were bathrooms.
Definitely check out this park

We took a day trip to Hilo and one place that our guide allowed us to visit was Richardson Beach Park.  I think we were so amazed to see in real time a black sand beach.  My son was just as intrigued as I was regarding the rocks.  The day on which we visited was cloudy and so the visibility for snorkeling was not the best, however, we enjoyed an opportunity to see what Mother Nature would never allow us to see in New Orleans…..A Black Sand Beach.

Very popular with locals. Perfect to spend two hours alongside a beautiful lava coastline, explore tide pools, enjoy a black sand beach and see a lot of fish. Snorkeling was much better than I expected. Saw one turtle. Perfect spot to hit if you’re spending one day in Hilo.

We had a great snorkel and beachwalk at Richardsons ... we had heard it was the best, and safest, snorkel beach on the eastside of Big Island near Hilo and we agree. Most good snorkeling is on the westside, where we live, but Richardsons did not disappoint us. The beach there is fun to walk along and we enjoyed our entire morning there.

We were in Hilo area for the waterfall and decided to explore the town. This park was near by and very nice to walk around exploring. It was very cloudy but still warm and enjoyed the view of the waves crashing into the rocks.

A local suggested that I go to this beach, and I am so glad I did! It seemed as though it was going to be very crowded initially, but I found a secluded nook on the rocks past the main beach and lifeguard station and had an amazing afternoon there. There were 2 turtles just lounging in the sun, and I loved jumping around on the rocks and watching the giant waves crash against them. On the other side is a calm and quiet bay where the snorkeling and swimming is great. There is black sand, grass, and lava to choose where to lie and then to walk into the calm and clear water.

I visited Richardson Beach Park with my parents in hopes of seeing sea turtles. It did not disappoint, we saw about 4 of them in a tide pool. We gave them their space but I still got incredible photos of them. Always respect wildlife, give them their space, be quite, and enjoy them from a distance. Unfortunately other tourists didn't have that same mentality and just stepped right over them for their selfies. Other then the turtles, the beaches were gorgeous and it was fun to climb around the rocks.

Our family of 3 adults dropped in for a quick snorkel. Wow! The fish variety and quality of the reef area was surprisingly good. I would say it was on par with most of the snorkeling we did on the Kona side. We even swam with a turtle for a quick minute!
The bay is very protected and entry/exit was pretty easy. It was made a bit more challenging by the fact that it was close to high tide but really no complaints.
Despite it being a rainy day, it was still very pleasant to snorkel.
The bathrooms were small but there were a couple of nice outdoor showers and a close-by grassy area that were handy to rinse and pack up snorkeling gear, towels and suits.

Great easy access beach’s many with good parking and yes turtles ... I counted six at this location on windy stormy later rainy day. At Richards beach walk past lifeguard station to area described by others. Wade through tiny outlet water to get up and close to turtles sheltering in this perfect cove Hilo side of island

Per my daughter “best snorkeling in Hawaii”. We also went to captain cook, two steps, Makaiwa bay, etc, etc. Nice hometown feel. Showers for post shower. We saw at least 12 turtles there. We went back for a total of 4 snorkel visits during our stay on the big island. Great clarity. Not for the faint of heart because of some of the currents. Luckily all of our family are swimmers (competitive). Definitely with a trip. Please help preserve this wonderful piece of nature by not being dumb and stepping on coral like we observed ignorant tourists do at many other places.
