We had SUCH a great time on this tour, and Rich was a fantastic guide! We learned so much about the island and its history and geology, and saw beautiful views on the drive up. Then once the stars and telescope came out, things got even better. Rich was so knowledgeable about everything we saw, and it was absolutely fascinating and beautiful. As for the logistics, it does get cold up there, so bundle up! The tour provides parkas which we definitely had to use. The free coffee/cocoa included was a nice touch as well.

We were really looking forward to this tour as not many tours to Mauna Kea leave from Hilo and were very disappointed with the outcome. We did not realize the tour did not go up Mauna Kea at all and regretted paying so much for an experience we could have had on our own. Ultimately, with this tour, my partner and I paid $500 for a boxed sandwhich and a 5-hour drive to see a waterfall (that we had already visited), a candy shop, and a lava tube. The tour guide was very kind and told us we would have great visibility that night and so we were sorely disappointed when it was cloudy, rainy, and we were unable to see the sunset (at all), Mauna Kea (at all), and any stars (we were never even able to got out of the van because it was such poor visibility). We drove 40 minutes to a park near the entrance to Mauna Kea access roads and could not see anything (including Mauna Kea) but ate our sandwiches there. Then we drove 30 minutes more up the mountain but were still unable to see anything. We then began our descent back to the pick-up location (again, to reiterate this tour does not go up Mauna Kea at all, it merely has views of Mauna Kea) as the visibility was so bad our tour guide apologized but we would not see a single star. The tour ended 2 hours early at 8:30pm and was such a bummer. Obviously the tour company cannot control the weather but with experiences like this, they could reach out and offer some kind of partial refund or a gift certificate to come back again another night. This tour was our last night on Hawaii so a gift cerificate would not have been useful to us but I would have been more likely to recommend the company to a friend. As it stands I'm warning my friends not to do any stargazing tours as there are no guarantees and to try to see Mauna Kea on their own. The only other thought, just generally, unrelated to the lack of stargazing experience, was that there is no reason for the tour to begin so early. The tour began at 3:30 and our driver shared that the stops we went to before heading up near Mauna Kea were just to fill the time. The tour was supposed to go until 10:30 pm. It would be better if it began at 5:30pm and was cheaper rather than filling time with stops that visitors can go easily on their own. Overall, a kind tour guide but a boring, anticlimactic experience where 5 hours in a van amounted to neither seeing Mauna Kea nor seeing any stars.

We had a great experience doing the volcano tour with this outfit. Our tour guide, Rich, was amazing and a wealth of knowledge. It’s an all day tour but worth every penny.

This all day trip is an investment that is totally worth it! Eric was our guide and picked us up promptly from our resort in the morning. He was a great driver, extremely knowledgeable about Hawai'i and volcanoes, and was a very nice person! He answered all of our questions and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable for the day. We visited a local Kona coffee farm, the southernmost bakery in the whole US, a black sand beach, and spent half a day at the Volcano National Park visiting an active volcano, walking through a lava tube, and exploring a previous eruption site. If you want a unique tour of the Big Island that you can't get anywhere else, I can't recommend KapohoKine Adventures enough for your itinerary!

Our guide Rich had an excellent background in Astronomy, and was able to show us many wonders of the night sky. At nearly 7000 feet, we had an amazing view of the heavens, and cannot recall when I saw so many stars!! The tour had 9 participants, so this limited the time that you could spend looking through the single telescope that was available. There were no places to sit during the stargazing, so everyone had to stand for 1 1/2 hours. Camp chairs would be a nice addition to this tour. Other points to improve was that the tour description talked about a stop at a plantation for a incredible dinner, which in reality was limited to a rest stop by the road (due to COVID) and consisted of a basic sandwich, chips and water. Also, pick up of all tour participants took almost 1 1/2 hour along the Kona coast, before the actual tour started.
