Fine museum and information center. Great stop to refresh, regroup and learn a thing or two about the Islands.

I like it a lot really, and there are exceptional craftspersons who exhibit there, but I rated it less than excellent only because it isnt the Metropolitan Museum. Maybe you need a new category = "unique and worth seeing". Plus it is connected to a park and across from the ocean, whats better than that?!

We enjoyed our visit to the Wailoa Center in Hilo this past week. It is an airy, open space in a circular building that is ideal for viewing artwork. The Woodturners exhibition was on when we visited and there was an impressive display of beautiful work by many local fine craftspeople / artists. I believe the gallery focuses on the work of local, contemporary artists, with changing exhibitions and does not have a permanent collection. It is a welcoming space for visitors who appreciate art and fine craftwork.

I am a woodworker and followed another's recommendation to visit the Hilo Woodturners exhibit at the Wailoa Center. There are a lot of excellent artist and skilled craftsmen in Hawaii, and this exhibit lived up to the recommendation. Further, the Wailoa Center seems nicely designed as a gallery for many types of art exhibits and is worth a visit.

The community center was closed when we stopped by the park to enjoy a picnic dinner one evening. While we were not able to enter the building, we did throughly enjoy the Veterans area on the grounds and the tribute to the fallen soldiers from the Big Island.
Very Moving.

A good place to connect with the local talent, from Hawaii Islanders who hand build Ukelele's to Fine Artists working in the latest medium, Crafts and Ceramics, this place is the venue...the Home of the Hawaii Nei Annual Show, this is Hawaii Art at its Best.

Wailoa Center has possibilities. It's infrastructure was being upgraded while we were there. The exhibits change monthly however unlike what some of these reviews have said while they may be interesting they are not necessarily the work of local artists. This January the exhibition was of San Francisco Bay Area Filipino American artists--some of whom I believe either came from the Big Island or had their training at UH-Hilo. It was our understanding from several people that the woodworking show that will open in February (an annual event tho I don't know if it's at the same time each year) is something very important and impressive. In fact we regretted very much not being able to see it as woodworking is one of the truly outstanding crafts in Hawaii.

They have different types of art through out the year. Everything from Ukulele Makers ,Photographers, Ceramic And much much more. I've attended many events for me the best one is the Big Island Woodturners Exhibit. It is held each year in March and runs for most of the month. If you enjoy fine woodworking in the turned form this is a must see.

This Center has a whole lot of local Artist shows but it is truely a lucky day if you show up while a art show is going on. Very Poor Management of the Center.
