Zoo was interesting with the limited number of exhibits it had. The butterfly house had only one butterfly the day we visited. The real reason we went was to see the white tiger. That exhibit was closed for refurbishing.

The zoo is a bit out of town, so if you're here from a cruise boat, it probably won't work for you. But, if you have a car, it is a short drive out of Hilo to one of the most pleasant zoos you'll encounter. As I said, it's free (donations accepted on the way out if you feel like... More

Small, but they do a great job with what they have. The gardens and grounds are very pretty. We enjoyed seeing some of the indigenous species and all the peacocks! If you like zoos or gardens, you will enjoy this spot!

This is not a traditional zoo like most people think of them. But it is worth going to especially with small kids. I get the impression that many of the animals are rescue animals and for that reason they are loved and special. It is obvious walking around the place that this is a labor of love for the "Friends... More

This is definately worth a stop if you are looking for something to do while in Hilo. The zoo is free and is a nice outing with some pretty gardens. Stop by the Macaw cage as he is fun to see. My family and I spent a very enjoyable morning here while on vacation.

I have driven past the zoo many times, and had heard the gardens were very nice. The main attraction, an albino tiger, died of old age earlier this year. The other animals and bird are in rather unfortunate cages that seem small or dirty or old or all three. The tropical birds are the highlight of the visit, and they're... More

Admission is free and so is parking. My family and I came here on a Saturday for their "petting zoo". My son had a blast petting the animals. I enjoyed taking pics of him petting the animals! It would have been nice, though, if the petting area was larger. There were a lot of animals and people crammed into a... More

This zoo is completely run by volunteers. They also rescue some birds, and some are adopted out if they can find a better situation for the animal. I really liked it. Stop by and give them some dough. They really need it and deserve to be supported.

Been here many times with the family and to kiddie parties. The kids love this place, petting zoo. I like it cause its free; admission and parking! and very relaxing with a decent amount of animals. Enjoy, if your in Hilo visiting it may be worth the time to check it out you can see the whole zoo in about... More

This is a fairly small zoo but it is free (and this is Hawaii) and they do have some interesting animals and the gardens around the walkways are really well kept. They are currently upgrading a few exhibits as they recently lost their main attraction (Bengal Tiger) but most of the animals were easily seen which is something not always... More
