We stopped here while we were walking around Hilo. There is some interesting history around this island (but none of that is really talked about with signs or anything on the island). It's a pretty small island, there are some ruins from buildings there. You can walk out on the lava rock and look at the ocean. There are some... More

There's not really a lot of beach areas around the hotels in Hilo, but this is a nice alternative area for relaxing, even though it really still doesn't have a beach.

Coconut Island is small, and doesn't take long to see, but we thought it was delightful. Be sure to read the history before you go. And take a picnic lunch so you can sit and enjoy the views.

Take a stroll out on this peninsula to see locals fishing, diving, and playing in the water. The swimming is sheltered and relatively safe for small children, and the view is million-dollar quality! Great for a walk or bike ride!

A little islands sitting in the middle of Hilo bay. Big enough that there is lots of room to spread out, plenty of swimming area for people of all ages. Bathrooms were clean. There were people fishing from the shores too.

If you are going to visit the Liluokalani Gardens, it makes sense to take the short walk across the bridge to Coconut Island. If it is your thing, bring a swimsuit and "cliff" jump off the bridge or the other towers on the island into the water. This is basically a weekend party island. Lots of families, loud music, people... More

You cross a bridge to enter the island. As you cross the bridge, look for fish. We saw different fish and a manta ray swimming in the water. There is a circular paved path that goes around the island. You can walk around the park in about 15 minutes.

This small park was a short walk from our hotel and provided an excellent spot to take pictures of Hilo Bay...assuming it wasn't a low cloud day.
