I am so glad i stopped by this place!! I was just driving past after snorkeling and saw a big red sign reading “LAVA TUBE NOW OPEN” and simply had to stop. Ended up having such a lovely time. First you can take the short walk down to the lava tube and then go upstairs into the coffee mill for some free coffee samples and learn about coffee!! All while looking out at a stunning view. Not to mention the air smells like delicious coffee from the coffee farm below! I highly recommend stopping here!!!

Try a few flavors, walk past the machines, and go through the short lava tube. Take a moment on the museum side as well if you haven't ever done a coffee tour. It's a quick stop. More details on things to do in Hilo on blog on TA trips page.

Nice view and interesting history. Be sure to take money and purchase their coffee. Add extra bags. We just got home and already wishing I had purchased more. The Best!!! They also have these delicious crispy cookies guava butter and mango butter. Omgoodness!!! What a treat and my grandchildren loved them!!! Nice gift shop and they give you a free sample of coffee.

We thought that we had visited the Royal Kona Coffee Mill as part of a Norwegian Cruise Line shore excursion in 2007 but in looking back at old photos, we had really gone to the Kolualua Coffee Company back then.
In any case, this was primarily a retail store for Royal Kona Coffee (which we actually did not like enough to buy any of). There was a very small museum and a lava tube. However, there was not much else to see. There are tours but they were not operating on the day that we visited.

This coffee center has a lot going for it.
1. It's got coffee, obviously, and lots and lots of samples. Try all the varieties to see what your palate prefers.
2. There is a lava tube on property that you can walk through
3. The flowers on the property are beautiful. Take a look at my pics.
4. The is a lot to learn about the history or coffee an other fun signage about Hawaii

Overall it was a much better stop that I was expecting.

I was looking forward to seeing where my favorite coffee was processed. I was a little disappointed that the processing area was off limits.
The tasting area and small museum was interesting.
The best part was walking through a section of a lava tube.

We first walked through the lava tube, which sloped downward. After that, we climbed stairs to get to the restrooms and also the room with Kona Coffee samples. Although I'm not much of a coffee drinker, I did try one of each of the two types you could sample and thought they were pretty good--for coffee, that is. Very interesting place and well worth a visit, particularly if you're planning to buy some Kona coffee to take home.

Royal Kona Coffee Center offers may free samples and provides for a self guided tour of their coffee processing. There is also a small lava tube that is very interesting to walk though. They have a store where you can buy their products and much more.

I have been to the big island 3x. EVERY time, I make a point of coming to this plantation, primarily to buy coffee. A bit of a premium? Yes, but if you want quality, this is the place.

Great selection of coffees and you can learn a lot. They have some coffee made with special beans that only account for 3 percent of beans and are hand picked. They are whole beans instead of split ones and have more nutrients and oils than the other 100% kona coffee. Its about 3 times the price as the 100% kona coffee, but they have free samples. Also spoke to owner when doing a sefl guided tour and he taught us a lot. for example, even though the dark roast is more expensive than medium, you can use lower quality beans in dark coffee.
