My husband and I went on one of their first tours back since Covid, and I'm so thankful they were back open (and we felt very safe too). I loved getting to see an organic family farm and learning about all that grows there and the history behind it. I like that they don't grow just one thing. Una and Leon are super passionate about what they do and that is evident the entire time you're there. Getting there was a bit of an adventure, but we had a Jeep, so it was fun. The coffee was so tasty we bought a few bags before we left, along with a chocolate bar (and a very cute tote bag). Leon also brought out banana for us all to try and they were the most flavorful I have ever eaten! If we find ourselves in this part of the world again, we'll jump at the chance to take their chocolate making class. If you want a glitz and glamour tour, this is not for you, but if you want to see the real thing and possibly get a little dirty and get involved, do this tour! We loved it.

My daughter and I are visiting The Big Island and since it is known for its famous Kona coffee we decided to take a tour. There are many free tours, but they do not do justice to the workings of an actual farm. This tour takes no more than ten people at a time so book early. Also, you must have completed both Covid-19 vaccines. This farm is Certified Organic and nothing goes to waste here. So much more than just coffee. Una and Leon are walking bodies of knowledge and both so personable. Free tastings along the way and a special surprise at the end that I won’t spoil for you. This has been by far the best part of our trip!

Una and Leon were so accommodating and friendly! It was really interesting to explore a genuine Hawaiian farm. Una let us sample many different goods on the tour including sugarcane, freshly cracked macadamia nuts, cinnamon, bananas, and chocolate. We ended with a small tasting on their lanai and had some of the best coffee I have ever tasted. After the tour they give you the option to purchase some of their goods and I am so glad we did. We will definitely be ordering some into the mainland too! The tour is super fairly priced and I thought it was a great addition to our trip!

One thing to note is that it is pretty difficult to get to the farm as it is uphill and a single lane gravel/dirt road. Google does not give accurate directions to the farm so Una will email you written directions once you book a tour that you must follow to get there. We navigated to the captain cook theater then followed the written directions from there. It would be very difficult to travel there by Uber and most Ubers would likely not take you there so its better if you have a rental car and not a fancy one.

So glad they were giving a tour on Christmas eve day. This tour includes more than just macadamia nuts and coffee and cocoa beans. We enjoyed seeing, sampling and learning about the wide variety of produce they grow on this farm.

Leon and Una are gracious and informative hosts. Used GPS to get to the Kona Theater, then used Una's handwritten map, which she will send via text the day before, to "cautiously" get to their wonderful farm (one-lane bumpy but largely paved road).

We saw and tasted so so many interesting things! Oranges, cinnamon, coffee cherries, macadamia nuts, sugar cane, plums, allspice. We each had a turn to crack a macadamia nut open. It was so educational learning about how coffee and chocolate are processed from the original fruit. We also saw many varieties of beautiful flowers (hibiscus), as well as plants/trees for avocados, bananas, cacao, white pineapple, lychee, lilikoi, papaya, ulu, guava, and taro. Not a whole lot of walking, everything is within a 2 minute walk from the main house. Long pants advisable due to mosquitoes.

After the tour, we returned to the lanai at their house to sample some banana and dried apple banana, cacao beans (raw and roasted), chocolate, and 100% Kona coffee from a french press. At the very end you are asked to pay the remaining balance and can shop for their exclusive food products and t-shirts.

Highly recommend! Really loved the variety of plants we were shown (not just coffee) and the thoughtfulness and intellect of the hosts.

We really enjoyed our tour with Una and then Leon who joined us during the tour. Una was very knowledgeable and gave us a variety of samples to hold and look at or to eat along the tour. We were given tea leaves to hold, a coffee bean out of its skin, and a cinnamon leaf. We did get to taste the oranges, cinnamon stem, sugar cane, ground cherry, an orange slice, guava, and tree tomato along the tour. We also sampled some coffee, banana and apple banana as well as a cocoa bean and a piece of chocolate at the end of the tour. We learned a lot as we toured walking around the coffee trees, banana plants, pineapple plants, avocado trees, oranges, guava, ground cherry plants, poinsettias, turmeric, grapefruit trees, macadamia nuts and vegetable garden. We got to crack our own macadamia nut too! While we were on the lanai drinking coffee and eating bananas and apple bananas, we were visited by the geckos who were enjoying bananas on the railing of the lanai! One of their cats, Monkey, also visited us on the tour, and with coaxing, we got to scratch him under the chin! We also saw chickens and it was fun watching one eating pieces of macadamia nut that was given to him in one peck! Great tour, lovely couple and very glad we went on this tour!

We visited Kuaiwi Farm in June 2013 after meeting one of the owners, Leon Rosner, on our flight enroute to Kona. Una Greenaway is the other owner. This is a small farm (as I recall, 5 acres) but -- oh, my word! - Una and Leon grow so much there! ✿

We saw, touched, and learned interesting factoids about Kuaiwi's organic coffee, cacao, banana, mandarin, and avocado plants. As well as pineapple, asparagus, purple sweet potato, kale, ginger, cherries, and more than I can list here. (The Keffir Lime leaves were heavenly!)

For sampling, Una also gave us fruit straight from the tree to eat; roasted cacao to chew; macadamia butter, guava jams, fresh and dried bananas to savor; and, of course, generous cups of her own Kuaiwi organiz coffee to drink.

Bonus: Feeding the neighbor's cows and goats. It was a bonus because I'm pretty sure it's not part of the official tour.

The fee for our tour was $15 each, with $5 each credited to purchases. And we are now at home enjoying Kuaiwi's 100% organic, Kona coffee and the best dried apple bananas ever! (Yes, I'm enthusiastic!)

In addition to managing Kuaiwi Farm, Una and Leon are involved with a not-for-profit that is helping Islanders learn (or re-learn) how to grow their own food (because, sadly, as I understand it, Hawaii now imports 90% of its food).

Lastly, I want to mention our appreciation to Una and Leon for their all-around great customer service. They confirmed and reconfirmed the date and time of our tour; gave us excellent directions on how to find them; took plenty of time to show us around and answer our questions; and immediately provided squirts of organic bug spray when they saw me scratching.

If you will be visiting the Big Island, then for sure we recommend a tour of Kuaiwi Farm.

About Access and Time to Allow
==========================
Stairs and wheelchairs were not an issue for us, so we did not pay attention to those items. I don't recall seeing any barriers, but if those items are important to you, then be sure ask when you make your appointment.

I honestly don't recall how much time we spent on our tour. Certainly, Una and Leon never rushed us and took plenty of time to answer questions. For sure, it was more than an hour and maybe closer to 2 hours. There were 4 on our tour, and more people probably means more time needed. So for recommended length of visit, I marked "2-3 hours."

I can't believe I forgot to review this farm until now when I was recommending a visit there to a friend. We had a blast getting to tour the farm, seeing cacao and coffee being grown, plus getting to see a cinnamon tree, vanilla vine, etc. The chocolate we bought there we savored for weeks to come because we just didn't want to be done with it! We'd definitely go back again.

We were looking for organic veggies and found Una and the Kuawi Farm. We signed up for a farm tour and got to see the coffee - nearly ready for picking, macadamia nuts in the shell, plus avocados, bananas, kale, asparagus, citrus trees, pineapples, passion fruit, and much, much more. We left with a box filled with amazing fresh veggies, as well as dried bananas, award winning coffee, and even homemade chocolate!! Yum.
