Grand Teton and National Elk Refuge Winter Day Trip

76 reviews
There’s a special beauty to Grand Teton National Park in the snowy silence of winter, free of the summertime crowds. On this Grand Teton day trip from Jackson Hole, a guide helps you search for bison and bighorn sheep, and you could also see moose, coyotes, eagles, or even wolves. In addition, visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art as well as the National Elk Refuge, where you ride past herds of powerful elk on a comfortable, horse-drawn sleigh.

We can’t wait to go back to Willow Creek to ride horses again next summer. We have gone up there for three years and enjoyed the breathtaking views on horseback with the friendliest wranglers in the west. Bailey and Dexton welcomed us like we were family...the beautiful draft/quarter horses traversed with ease to the mountain top where I witnessed the breathtaking views of the Tetons on my stead, Comanche. The wildflowers, springs and stream crossings all added to a perfect ride!

We took the 2-hour trail ride with lunch (I think it was just Albertsons sandwiches but they were good). What would have been breathtaking views I'm sure was instead too smoky to really even make out the outline of the Tetons. The ride was great though, as we rode up 2000' in elevation to a ridge then back down. Our wrangler Preston was funny and very engaging with our boys (ages 12 and 9) who rode right behind him. The horses were very gentle and Preston clearly knew how to manage them and their humans. We would absolutely ride here again.

On the positive side, Willow Creek accommodated our day-before reservation. Our wrangler was enthusiastic and had an impressive riding background, and the meal was fresh and filling. The trail is well-beaten yet beautiful. Unfortunately, the horses were very tired and not well cared for; horses had feces smeared on them, a couple of horses were wheezing for the entire ride, some had open sores, and their manes were dirty and matted. We watched a different wrangler slap, shove and poke the horses and call them derogatory names (in front of customers). They paired the youngest, most inexperienced rider with an ornery horse (they admitted he was a difficult ride when they were paired) which ended in that customer not riding but being pulled by the wrangler for the majority of the trip. It was extremely difficult for my family (we have a livestock farming backgound) to witness the lack of care and compassion for the hard-working horses. We left the ride wishing we had chosen another outfitter.

Thank you for your response , We are so sorry you did not have a wonderful experience. We had been closed the 4 previous days due to the heavy smoke in the area from the fires, we where so happy the big rain storm the day before blowing out most of the smokie air. Our biggest responsibility is to keep our customers safe, We continue train our hosts to keep every one safe. Again we are sorry you did not enjoy your ride. Our goal is to show all our guest what a beautiful place we call home in the Bridger Teton National Forest. We do hope you come out and ride with us again. Thank you
