About
Daryl L. Hunter, author of the "Grand Teton Photography and Field Guide." offers landscape photography/wildlife safaris through the magnificent landscape of Grand Teton National Park and to the plethora of wildlife who make northwest Wyoming their home. The photography lesson is catered to individual ability and desire. For the novice, Daryl cuts to the chase with several shortcuts that slices through the obscure tech stuff to make the complex understandable; this evidenced in many of the reviews. Smart phone photographers are welcome. A natural history lesson is also a part of the trip as Daryl was an interpretive guide long before there was a market for photography tours. Jackson Hole is a lot more than beautiful photos; non-photographer guests find they have booked a private tour with a portrait photographer who can make them look great in a stunning landscape. Daryl also offers tours to other destinations both in the USA and abroad. Daryl’s reviews speak for themselves.

Let me start by saying that we're fairly familiar with Jackson Hole and GTNP...but we had a limited amount of time on this visit and we booked two different guides. Each of them was wonderful and each was very different.
Our tour with Daryl started off a bit rocky - and that was entirely our fault. We had our days mixed up and weren't quite ready for a phone call that early. However, we were able to meet up with Daryl and begin our tour albeit a bit later than originally planned. Most people would have been irritated and perhaps even canceled the tour, but Daryl was so accommodating and made sure that everything worked out.
Within the first few minutes of our tour, I could tell that Daryl knew photography and cameras. Many tour operators claim to know photography, but Daryl was one of the first that I've encountered that actually could back that claim up. It was so refreshing to have someone along that I could count on if I had a question. He even had a tripod available for me to use for some slower shutter-speed shots.
We really tried to focus on the scenic parts of Jackson and Daryl knew all the great spots for great photos. Sure, you can drive around yourself and try to find spots at the right time of day, but having his knowledge of how certain areas look at certain times of the day was invaluable. When you have a limited amount of time on a trip, it's always a great benefit to have someone who can maximize that time for you.
I would definitely recommend Daryl for people who are not too versed in photography as his knowledge will help them get the shots they want. Additionally, many times when you encounter people who are very knowledgable in photography, they can be very condescending and arrogant...Daryl was quite the opposite and that was such a relief, I'm a professional photographer and it was very refreshing to be able to talk to someone and not feel like they're trying to constantly one-up you. A true gentleman who knows what he's talking about.

It was a joy showing you two around and comparing business model and our work, you have carved a very cool niche in the industry. When I book fellow pros or those who have already photographed Grand Teton a lot, I always worry if I will measure up and be able to bring anything to the table, I'm thrilled to hear I met the challenge and introduced you to some fresh vantage points. Until the next time - Cheers

I have found Daryl very good to deal with. We were all set to travel to Jackson Hole from New Zealand when my CEO cancelled all international flights due to COVID-19 fears. We contacted Daryl straight away and he immediately refunded our deposit - no questions asked. I would gladly rebook with him again in the future.

Looking forward to when you can make it out in better times Robert. Sometimes things are out of our control and pandemics certainly are at the top of that list. If I ever heard a good reason to cancel this is it. Until the next time - Cheers

Can't say enough good things about our time with Daryl. He is a down to earth guy who knows his stuff. He went way out of his way to help us get the shots we wanted. We're already planning another trip back to the Grand Tetons so we can have another photography workshop with him. Worth every penny!

This was my second tour with “The Hole Picture...”.
This time my wife and I were led by Daryl Hunter on two half day Safaris in the Grand Tetons.
This year we were led to new perspectives of the Mormon Barns, the “exact” spot to photograph from the Snake River Overlook, a a dawn photo op of a group of Elk, and a long sought trip to Schawbacher’s landing.
All in all a trip I plan to repeat and highly recommend.

It was so good having you along again Richard, happy I could show you some fresh horizons for Grand Teton National Park. It is always a nice challenge to find fresh stuff for those of you who have made Jackson Hole a regular destination. Until the next time.

This was the first time we have ever been to The Tetons and Yellowstone area. I love photography and knew there would be lots of great things to see but how would I find them. I decided to book a tour with Daryl Hunter. That was the best decision I could have made. He took us to many remarkable views and found many animals to photograph. His knowledge of the history and natural ecosystems was excellent. I was able to learn many new ways to use my camera and new things to try in post production. With the crystal blue sky and the snow we were able to take many great memories back home to North Carolina.

Dale it was pleasure to show you two around during your escape from Florida. It is so much fun for me to show people a winter of sun and sand isn't always the best decision. Glad I could show you a few things and share our wildlife and landscape. Hope to see you out here in June for wildflower season. Cheers.

This is my 2nd tour with The Hole Picture photo safaris.
I had a 2 day tour with Daryl June/4-5 2020. He is very knowledgeable about photography and the area. He knows where the good landscape shots are and where to find animals. I got many good photos with his help and learned about the history of the area. We saw #399 the famous grizzly with her 4 cubs which was a highlight. A beautiful area. Darryl made the trip a lot of fun. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend his photographic tour in the Grand Tetons. Darryl’s knowledge and assistance was fantastic. Loved it! He took me to great locations and was very patient giving me some great tips. Also as a solo traveller I only had limited lenses so he lent me his zoom lens to capture the wildlife. Great conversation too. I left my crampons in his car and he delivered them back to my hotel the next day. Very much appreciated Darryl. Many thanks again!

JoAnne, you were a pleasure to have along, happy I had a 500mm that would fit your camera. You as a solo traveler had me enraptured with your adventures. Hopefully I will be able to show you some of my other USA destinations we discussed. Until the next time ~

I hired Daryl for two separate sessions - one in the late afternoon/evening and one at sunrise. He is an absolute pro and knows all of the best spots for photographs at different times of day. He was also really helpful when it came to figuring out the right camera settings for different kinds of images. I came away with far better pictures than I would have had I gone on my own! He's also a lovely, kind, incredibly interesting man who knows a lot about the region, the flora and fauna. I couldn't recommend him more highly. If you want great photos of one of the most beautiful places in the world, hire him!

My wife and I were planing on our Grand Teton and Yellowstone Tour when I came up with the idea to take a Foto Tour.
We never did any kind of this and so we wonder how to chose.
I liked the Picture Style of Daryl and so we decided that this must be the best Person.
We contacted him via a mail and got a very nice correspondence, simple and helping to chose what we want.
We took the Combo Half Day Grand Teton and One Day Yellowstone.
Daryl is really a very impressive Personality. He knows all the Foto Spots, where to find which Wildlife and he always explained why.
He is full of the History of the area which will inspire you to google even more when you return from the tour ;)
He took perfectly care on our needs for good fotos, stories, personal needs and is just the best person you could wish to guide you through these outstanding locations.
I still need to work on all the fotos I have made which will keep this great experience very long alive.
Thank You Daryl and we hope we will make it back.
Maybe we will just meet at Glacier :-)))

Thorsten, it was fun spending a couple of days with you and your wife. I'm glad your photo harvest was good and you appreciated the history, geology, ecology as well as the photography. I thank you for the information on Germany, that will help with my photo tour there next April.
You will enjoy our Glacier National Park tour as much a GTNP and Yellowstone as it is another amazing place. Thank you for the awesome review. Until the nest time ~ Cheers.

We did a day trip with Daryl to Yellowstone National Park. He was really fantastic guide on all fronts. He is a very gifted photographer with great advice and tips for achieving terrific shots. He also has a comprehensive knowledge of the area and was able to show us all the iconic spots. He knew where and when to spot wildlife which was a real thrill for my wife and me. He also gave us tips for where to go on our own. Lastly, Daryl is a lot of fun to be around. He's very personable and loves to share his corner of the world. It was a full day and Daryl had arranged for lunch. We enjoyed a picnic under the gaze of a curious raven.
It was a great experience which I would highly recommend.

Does the full day include the Teton's and Yellowstone? Where can I find more information. I did not see a link to website on tripadvisor. Thanks

Hi Dayrl,
We will be in Tetons/Jackson June 17 thro 22. Do you gave any availability then? How many people attend your tours?I read your your is 45 hours. How is that broken down? Please let me know how price / hours are figured if in fact you have any availability.
We live in South Florida and are headed up that way . I am a teacher and I have twins but they are adults. I'm old and disabled so I can't take them....One of my daughters did a tour last year with a professional like yourself and it served her very well. She takes pictures of graduates for side $$. She is getting a minor in astronomy and LOVES nature and photography. It was a tour / Clinic. I was looking for something simular. They both want to go. Both environmental majors, love nature. If you are unavailable can you suggest someone who would be good for us with my explanation? Thank you so much my name is Toni, number is 9543471581
