Grand Teton and National Elk Refuge Winter Day Trip

76 reviews
There’s a special beauty to Grand Teton National Park in the snowy silence of winter, free of the summertime crowds. On this Grand Teton day trip from Jackson Hole, a guide helps you search for bison and bighorn sheep, and you could also see moose, coyotes, eagles, or even wolves. In addition, visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art as well as the National Elk Refuge, where you ride past herds of powerful elk on a comfortable, horse-drawn sleigh.

For a person that’s never even shot a rifle before, I never would have dreamt that I could hit a target from a mile away. Thanks to Shepard’s expert coaching, I was able to proudly join the mile shot club :) I’m completely amazed that I even hit the target. Shepard made it easy by clearly explaining how to take the shot, adjusting to the wind, and spotting. Not only is Shepard an expert on shooting, he is so warm and friendly. From the beginning we felt like old friends. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a unique, exclusive experience!

I‘m a hunter from Germany and always wanted to shoot longer distances since it’s almost impossible to access ranges longer than 300 yards in Germany. I got to Wyoming with my girlfriend and we had a great time seeing Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons but this experience was something completely different: Shepard drove us out to his range and we set up some targets. We „warmed“ up at about 1000yards. It was impressive to shoot with a silencer and I was lucky to score a hit after adjusting the drop and windage on the scope. The setup was a Ruger precision rifle in 6,5 creedmore with a 27 powered vortex scope. It was astonishing to see how close the hits were at 1000yards and Shepard corrected my aim giving me his wind readings. He could explain the complicated physics very easily and provided excellent spotting. We moved on to a target that was one mile away: to be exact 1,670 m!!! It is hard to believe that this is technically possible if you see the distance. Especially having driven the distance on atvs before to put up the steel plate up, which took us about 20 minutes to cover. The wind picked up and we had some close target hits. After some minor windage corrections I had 2 visible hits on the distance and a rewarding „ping“ sounded to my ears about 7 seconds after I could see the impact in the scope. My girlfriend never shot a rifle before and Shepard explained how to Handle the rifle and manage the trigger press. She tried the mile shot as well and I spotted for her correcting her holdover and windage. She scored 2 solid hits and I was super proud of her! All in all it was a unique experience and Shepard is a great knowledgeable guy that made us feel like close friends when we met him. I would definitely want to try again and do the multi gun experience the next time I’m visiting Wyoming! Thanks Shepard for this great opportunity and hope to come out soon again!

Few instructors in any technical discipline are able to tailor their their lessons to the needs of their students. Shepherd Humphries is an exception. He listens first, then teaches...the mark of a great teacher/instructor. I offer these observations from my background as a CFII (Certified Flight Instructor Instrument) with 42 years of experience in aviation. Thus, the exceeded expectations comment. We’ll go for 5,280 feet, 1,760 Yards, 1 mile...next season... Thanks, Shep!!!

This was an amazing opportunity! You are out in nature and getting to test your limits by trying new things and seeing what you are truly capable of. I recently learned about Nomad Rifleman in Forbes and had to try it myself. The coach was amazing and patient. He made sure we walked away feeling accomplished and successful. If you are looking for something fun to do, this is something that will be well worth it.

There’s nothing like a day in the wilderness in my experience - whether it’s the desert, the mountains or offshore. It settles the mind and focuses you in ways you can’t find in the rush of day to day life. To make it perfect, what if I can add a memorable and important experience to that day in the wilderness? And what if I can make the experience smooth and easy at the same time? That’s just what JHSE’s Nomad Rifleman is. Combine the experience of being in the Wyoming backcountry - miles of scenic views and not another soul around - with learning to shoot extended long range. Top that off with five-star service, food and a staff of knowledgeable and gracious hosts, and you get the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience Nomad Rifleman day. And at the end of the day, I managed to locate, DOPE and hit targets from 700 yards all the way to 1860 yards. I’m not sure what you think of a one mile shot. I thought I couldn’t do it - my home gun range only goes to 600 yards, and that’s as far as I’d hunt, so shooting this far seemed out of the realm of possibility for me. However, thanks to the patient ministrations of world-class long range shooting instructors Scott Austin, Steve Marsteller and Shepard Humphries, I not only hit the target, but was able to come back later the same day on my own, dial in my own DOPE, and hit the same 1860 yard target two more times. And as a prize, we were fed a fantastic lunch, cooked on site, complete with fresh peach cobbler!
