It was a beautiful drive from Yellowstone via Hwy 16, unfortunately as we were exiting Bighorn National Forest, the grade exiting the park was so steep that our brakes caught fire. We are now sitting at the Pizza Hut in Buffalo hoping our brakes can be repaired tomorrow.

Apparently this happens so frequently that Buffalo, a town of several hundred, supports multiple towing companies and auto repair businesses. Pro: our tow truck driver Wes from Expert Towing was awesome, be sure to ask for him!

Drove 32' RV from Cody today. I would not recommend this route for trip planning. Sixty miles from Ten Sleep to Buffalo. All of it was in 1st or 2nd gears. Very stressful despite good road. Two hours for 60 miles but saved brakes. Yes, great scenery but come up from Shoshone thru mountains. Much better, no grades, more beautiful canyons. Hwy 120 to Cody is great.
Also, if you do take Hwy 16 thru the Bighorn Mountains, stay on it to Cody. No shortcuts as roads are in poor condition.

Route 16 from ten sleep to buffalo is a must see if you are in the area . We drove a 34 foot class A motor home towing a nine foot motorcycle trailer. No problem. As mentioned before, there are a lot of ups and downs but also plenty of pull offs to let those impatient travelers get by. The views are spectacular and the road is much less " twisty" then 14. If you are headed for buffalo from the west or Yellowstone from the East, take this beautiful and safe road.

We had planned to drive Scenic Route 16 as far as the turn off to Crazy Woman Canyon, but discovered it was a 15 mile dirt road with pot holes and rocks, so we elected to continue to Ten Sleep and were glad we did. Route 16 takes you through three geological formations. for the first 35 miles of your 64 miles trip there will be forests, snow capped peaks and tundra like hill. Once you pass Meadowlark Lake and Ski Resort the topography changes to steep canyon walls with hair pin curves and steep incles and declines. Then, when you reach Ten Sleep the scenery once again changes to a colorful desert similar to what you will see in Deadwood. It took us 4 and 1/2 hours to make the round trip....three and one 1/2 to Ten Sleep and one hour back. We stopped at all of the turnouts and took over 200 pictures. Hint: Go west just before noon and back afternoon as the sun will favor your photos. Hint: The only gas is at Meadowlark 40 miles from Buffalo and 20 from Ten sleep. There is food and lodging there as well.

Starting out at Buffalo, we stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites. It is a very nice place to stay & reasonable. Before we left town we visited the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum & the Occidental Hotel. Then we headed for Yellowstone, taking Hwy 16, the Cloud Peak Highway. It was early June and we could see lots of snow on the Big Horn Mountains. We have been to Wyoming many times, and have taken different routes. This one is easier & very beautiful. And the road is in good shape & there are guard rails where they are needed.
The 1st high pass will you encounter is Powder River. Nearby we saw some big Mule Deer bucks, bounding with their usual spring legged hop. We stopped by Meadowlark Lake which is part of the Bighorn National Forest; there are toilets here that are clean. This lovely little lake is a nice place to breath in the fresh mountain air.
As we headed towards Ten Sleep, there were excellent views of the Ten Sleep Canyon. It was carved by Glaciers 250,000 years ago. You will want to stop and take some photos. You will see all colors here, red, white, grey, black & more. We stopped by the Leigh Creek Monument. It is about 9 miles east of Ten Sleep. It was in memory of a man who fell to his death in 1889.
We stopped by the Ten Sleep welcome center & museum. Take time to check this out. It is run with donations. Ask about the Spring Creek Raid.
Then he headed towards Cody. We enjoyed stopping at the towns on the way. Everyone was so friendly. Try to not be in such a hurry. There is a lot to see on this route.

We drove the Cloud Peak Skyway May 16, 2018. It is a beautiful drive with great scenery. We also did Chief Joseph Scenic Highway the same day. I would say these drives are both beautiful and I would certainly recommend doing at least one of them, both, if you are heading to Yellowstone anyway.

Grades do not exceed 7%. There are plenty of wide spaces to stop with RV's cars etc. to take pictures. Commercial trucks travel this route with ease. Ten Sleep WY is a good place for a lunch stop. Bull Creek or Lake View campgrounds are nice place to camp and fish Meadowlark lake.

We were on the way to Grand Teton and Yellowstone and we took this amazing scenic drive. It is beautiful and worth it. It made me want to go back and spend more time in the area.

Get off the main interstate and really see Wyoming! Take the exit for Highway 16 in Buffalo and turn either way...right or left. Right will take you on over toward South Dakota and left will take you to the Big Horn Mountains, Ten Sleep and beyond. There are little communities, open range, beautiful fields of grain and corn. There are groups of Pronghorn antelpe roaming and the deer are playing. You'll cross creeks and rivers and drive thru high canyon walls that are millions of years old. The very best photographs of moose I have ever taken were on Highway 16 in the Big Horns. There are beautiful lakes. There are old barns from years gone by just waiting to show up in your photographs. I would highly suggest you get yourself some sort of self-guided tour book to take along and read out loud while someone else is driving. Be prepared to stop lots of times. If not to take a photo or have a picnic then just to listen to the silence of the world at its best.

Living in the small town of Buffalo, Wy. is a blessing within itself, but having US Highway 16 run right through our town taking us into the Big Horn Mountains makes life even more beautiful. The hiking is great. There are a great many well groomed trails, adding to the wonderful mountain scenery, flowers, smells and critters. Free camping is great if you don’t mind roughing it. Just a simple drive through the mountains any season is relaxing and if you are fortunate you may even get to see some of the bigger wildlife such as moose and elk. The canyon leading into Ten Sleep, Wy. is absolutely breathtaking. Plan a trip, come to Wyoming and see what US Highway 16 has to offer!!!!
