On an absolutely beautiful May date, our family was pleasantly surprised on how much we enjoyed the Upper Dells Cruise. Prior to boarding, passengers were organized by arrival & thus, one could sit comfortably awaiting your turn to board. Folks were also advised that the seat you chose once you boarded would be the seat you would return after each stop, avoiding any misunderstandings during the trip. There was an opportunity to get one’s photo taken but we declined & were not in the least bit hassled.
The captain & assistant were both college female students who were very competent & did an excellent job with the narration. Of course, they had a few corny jokes but the content presented was informative & their delivery style was humorous!
I particularly liked the Witches Gulch - flat & easily accessible. The area where the dog jumping took place is followed by a brief but lovely walk through a wooded area. This area is paved but definitely much more of an incline. The actual dog leap was fun to watch. Don’t worry, there is a net if an accident should occur. At both stops, passengers who did not want to disembark could remain on the boat.
When proceeding up to street level after the cruise, the climb is fairly steep on a paved surface. The crew offered those with health issues an elevator to facilitate their exit safely. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise which was made possible by the stunning weather & well organized & personable staff!

We brought our two dogs on the Upper Dells Boat Tour with us and we had a relaxing boat ride. After docking our dogs loved sniffing and exploring along the trail at Wiches Gulch. It was great! The scenery was beautiful and the walk was so calming; however, the way back was another story. The trails aren't very wide and another tour boat from the same company had docked sometime shortly after we did and that group didn't stick to one side of the trail so it made the walk back very cramped and difficult to maneuver with the dogs as we weaved between people, especially when our dogs crossed paths with another dog from the other group. Furthermore, on the boat ride back to shore it began to rain so while our seats on the boat were sheltered, everyone else that was previously cruising at the top of the boat moved below into our cabin to avoid getting soaked and the situation got cramped again so beware if If your dogs are claustrophobic. Thankfully, ours did pretty well but I could tell at the end they started to feel stressed because of everyone crowding in on them.

We had a ball on the ghost tour. We enjoyed the ride out to Witch's Gulch and then walking along the trails we were continually "scared" by the live actors. It was so much fun! They do an excellent job. Meeting all the actors afterwards in their costumes was really enjoyable too. One person did NOT heed the warnings and brought a young child. He was crying. Listen to the organizers and do not bring little kids!

Family
This place is beautiful and peaceful. We visited there on an Upper Fails Boat tour but plan to return by car if possible one day so that we are able to spend more time there. My husband and I took our two children (2 and 5). It did make me nervous with young children as I was afraid they may fall beneath the railing, so we ended up carrying our 2 year old just to be safe. Would highly recommend this place especially for couples or families with older children.

Walked through the Witches Gulch as part of our upper Dells boat trip. Fascinating to get up close to the sandstone banks and the intricate bath the river carved over thousands of years. Fairly easy walk even for someone using a cane. The path is mostly flat with a gentle incline.

Well maintained, beautiful scenery. Great photo ops.
Even saw two adult Bald Eagles flying and the roosting on a tree along the river and a great heron, birds you won't see in the city!!! The rock formation always amazes me.

We took the boat tour of the lake. The scenery was spectacular! The boat made a stop at Witches Gulch, where we were able to make the short easy walk through the rock formation knowb as Witches gulch. When we reached the end of the Boardwalk there was a parking lot, so there apparently is accessby motor vehicle as well as boat. The snack bar had an end of season sale- large delicious ice cream cones for $1!

These rock formations and the slot canyon and the creek that created the canyon are all wonderful. You must take a boat to the canyon, disembark and walk for 5 minutes up the boardwalk to the origin of the canyon. There is (ugh) a concession stand and gift shop there.

To tour this area you have to take the Upper Dells Boat Tour. A very nice tour overall and this hike was definitely the highlight. Our 11 son said it was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen in nature. Unfortunately you are only able to spend 15-20 minutes in the area to keep up with the tour.

Witches Gulch was an included stop on both the Upper Dells tour and Jet boat tour we participated in. The path and walkway are great and only narrowed a bit towards the end of the trail towards a small concession stand (which was great to breakup the tours) and included a bathroom area. Pictures in the gulch were awesome and our family loved how windy the paths got at times, it made you feel like you were almost by yourself in the gulch.

I think I already know the answer, but I’ll ask anyway. Can dogs come on the boat tour? TIA!

I've never seen one on the tour. I would suspect that only ADA dogs are permitted.

Do you have to get back on the same boat? Can you hike and catch another boat later? I would love to hike the entire two miles but can't do that in 20 minutes.

There’s nowhere to hike in this area, it’s all private property. The time from the boat allows enough time to see what there is to see!

Is there any way you could take your own boat to see witch’s gulch?

I believe the dock where you gain access to Witches Gulch is privately owned by Dells Boat Tours.

If you do the Dells Boat Tour the free parking is directly behind Ripley's.

11 a.m. - 2 p.m. because sun is higher, but really any time during daylight can work. I hope you enjoy it!
If you get a "combo" ticket and get the Lower Dells for not too much in addition to the Upper Dells, it is worth it, especially if you've never been to the Dells before. Some people will see the Lower Dells by Original Duck (which we do too), but you only see a portion (albeit a pretty portion) by going on the Ducks.
