Finally I got an answer to why this random small town became a tourist trap, and it was largely because of Mr. Bennett's photography and promotion. It was quite an interesting exhibit and free this season.

Museum of Bennett's photo studio. Great piece of history regarding photography in the US and many of his pictures of Native Americans from this region.

This is a GREAT place! You'll see the history of the Dells area, all in pictures! H.H. Bennett was responsible for the "famous" Dells photo of his son jumping from one rock formation to the other - find out why that photo was the talk of the town - and of the world! - at the time he took it!... H.H. Bennett made the Dells famous as a tourist destination. The studio allows you to step back in time & really capture the experience of what the area was like before the tourist shops & waterparks. You get to learn about early photography and the time period, as well. The studio is a great opportunity to teach kids (and adults!)... More

This was free this year due to a grant they had received. Enjoyed learning about the history of the Dells, the local area and people.

Enjoyed the museum, surprisingly very interactive so it even kept my teenagers entertained. Beautiful pictures and glimpse of a bygone era. We bought a neat book in the gift area for $2 that showed Bennett's pictures of Dells landmarks along pics of those same landmarks today. So neat to see how the Dells have changed! Many people were walking by... More

Ran by the Wi. State Historical Society this is where the tourist business began for WI. Dells. You're able to look at some of the stereoscopes (pictures) that H.H. Bennet sold and started the tourist rush to WI. Dells.

I had been inside the gift area of this museum many times, but never had the time to get into the actual museum and studio. When I found out that the Wisconsin Historical Society was not charging admission anymore, I thought I would make time to give it a shot. The museum traces the life of H.H. Bennett and the... More
