A Great Community Asset.

What an amazing and unique place to relax and explore in the Wausau area. Very tranquil and lots of trails to explore. Perfect for toddlers and dogs! Yes-it is a work in progress but if people knew what operating a FREE facility like this entailed I think they'd have more understanding. And yes there are mosquitoes! This is Wisconsin for christ sake! The kids and public events are well run and very thoughtfully put together. It will be so fun so see the property progress and morph as time goes on. Best way to keep supporting that...donate!

Beautiful, peaceful and enjoyable

Beautiful fauna, great staff / volunteers who are very knowledgeable, and love to answer questions, and direct you to where you want to go / see. Fabulous culturally themed vegetable / herb gardens, and kitchen for teaching classes. Nice stream to walk along. The developed area is smaller than expected, but it was a very nice stroll. Free.

NIce Way to See the Local Horticulture

This is a wonderful way to spend a couple hours of strolling through a wooded area. First off do not go thinking you will find a manicured property. It is not that. They have gardens and areas that are manicured (not many). But it is a free attraction and if taken in that light it is quite nice to see. It is also nice for a walk in the woods. We particularly liked the area noting the names of the different types of ferns. The tree house was also a nice touch. Standing on the top level of it allowed you great views of the white pines that surround it.

We prefer a more manicured landscape (this is not). However given that it is done primarily through volunteer efforts this was a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours. There is a lot of work that has gone into this property. It also appears based off of the signage it is very much a work in progress. They have big plans for a couple of other gardens that will arrive within the next year. We would enjoy going back to see this again when they have completed them.

Still if you go understanding this is a work in progress, as well as this is not a manicured Botanical Garden you can have a couple of enjoyable hours here. We enjoyed our time here and are grateful to those that have endeavored to bring their knowledge and gifted green thumbs to the area. Definitely worthy of a stop for those who enjoy gardening.

We don't live far away and decided after hearing about the botanical garden to go see it. I was not aware it was even there though I had lived in the area 40 years. We chose a weekday morning to go and found it nice and quiet. There are wide walkways and lots of plants blooming. What I especially found attractive were the many benches scattered in shady areas. At the beginning of the walk, there was a map of the park which could stand to be bigger and higher up. I know this is still a work in progress and can't wait to revisit to see what else they have. I saw several docents who were entertaining a small group of children asking them questions about what they saw, etc. There are bathrooms and wide areas to picnic in. It is not far from the North Central Technical college but very quiet. Check it out! Donations are accepted.

You can also volunteer to help out as they are planning more areas including a kids playland which should be fun. You don't have to stay over an hour as the paths lead back to the beginning, but if you like nature, take all the paths to get the whole experience.

Disappointment

This was written up as a great place. I've seen many like it and it's mostly meant for locals, I think. I would go out of my way to see it. But then, botanical gardens have to be "something else" to impress me.

Thank you for your input. I am sorry you did not enjoy your visit. The Gardens is a work in progress. Development began in 2010 and each year we work hard to add programs and new gardens. Most of what you see was accomplished by an all-volunteer organization. I would encourage you to take a look at our website(www.monkgardens.org) which shows our master plan for the full acreage. This is what we are working towards as funding allows. I would encourage you to visit us again, next year to see new improvements.

Nice for Walk and Talk

We love this place. Located less than two miles from our home, the Monk Botanical Gardens offer a wonderful opportunity to "get away from it all" while in the City of Wausau.

There are options for different walks, each with an abundance of ways to learn new things, or just to enjoy the peace and quiet. Most enjoyable are the four seasons that can be experienced – including snow shoeing in the winter!

If you live in or near Wausau, do not let Monk Botanical Gardens be one of those experiences that you lived near but never visited.

nice garden - lots of potential
Aug 2018 • Family
We enjoyed exploring this garden on Sunday. very quiet and peaceful. you can tell that they have worked hard to build it, and there is so much potential for future improvement. It would be nice to have more plotted flower beds in the space. The kitchen garden was gorgeous. The treehouse is perfect for all ages. I can see a lot of volunteer and internship opportunity here if recruited by leadership more heavily. Parking is somewhat limited.
