I don't remember this being here last time I visited - this seems to have sprung out of nowhere. However, as Washington Island gets touristy, this is expected. Door county and the island have a rich farming history, and this open-air museum gives an excellent overview of that era. Museum is free to enter and wonder around, consisting of many buildings scattered on a patch of land. But please leave donations (someone has to maintain the museum) - the donation boxes are conveniently located on the property.

Free self-guided tour with brochure and donation box. All buildings were open including the log house but didn't see any personal. It showcases buildings from various island locations that were moved and reassembled here along with the hand tools and agricultural machinery used in early farm life between 1870 and 1940. Buildings include a log cabin, barn, forge, sawmill, corn crib, outhouse, Gallery barn, farm animal pen, weaving shed, machine shed, blacksmith shop, and log shed. Of interest, inside the gallery barn, on the second floor, was a copper still, used on the island during prohibition. Went here on September 23.

Pick up a map of the barn and direct yourself around the site, taking your time as you go. Several different buildings to visit, each with its own history. In one building is a video to relax and watch.. They have a few goats onsite also. A nice stop for any age.

We were killing time until the ferry left for the ride back to the peninsula, and stopped at this quaint little outdoor old farm museum. What a pleasant surprise! There was no admission charge, just donation boxes. This little farm museum was completely self-guided. Volunteers have moved old farm buildings from around the island to this one location. They renovated the buildings and added a collection of historic artifacts. The kids really enjoyed exploring each building: barns, houses, a weaving shed, stables, etc. There were real goats and chickens to feed. The kids loved dressing up in period clothing for photos on the old wagons. There was a video about the history of farming on Washington Island. The kids also got a kick out of pumping water from the well, using a yoke to carry it, and watering the garden. There was not a worker on site, but everything was in wonderful condition. I was amazed at what a worthwhile stop this was, for a free attraction run only by local volunteers.

First I understand it was free & self guided, but there was nobody at all around to ask any further questions. I got the wrong impression of the buildings too, thinking they were a bit larger. All in all, an interesting exhibit.

Both the kids and the adults enjoyed this attraction. Guys will love all the farming history. Kids loved using the waterpump and watering the garden, plus seeing the animals.

Very unique and authentic, like the whole island!
I have visited it as a part of the Cherry Train Tour which I recommend to everyone who wants to see the beauty of Washington Island! The train pick you up from the harbor and the wonderful guide drives you around the island, telling you many interesting stories.

My husband and I were traveling with a group of seniors and this was one of our stops with the Cherry Train. Dick was a wonderful historian, driver, sightseer. He provided us with a great history of the Farm Museum and made it very interesting. We had enough time to stroll the farm and take some wonderful pictures. The Museum is open daily from mid-May until Columbus Day. According to available literature, "Volunteers restored 9 buildings including exterior and interior displays; new timber frame barn, farm and field machinery, tools and blacksmith shop. Authentically furnished log cabin shows home life. Family Craft Days on Wednesdays 1-3 PM in July. Picnic areas..Nearly all the buildings are original Island structures which were moved to the museum site and reconstructed...The Pioneer Cabin is furnished as the home of a typical farm family of that period. The Log Shed contains a display of antique tools used by early Islanders. The Stone Building has been reconstructed from the stones originally used when it was built to store crops. It later housed pigs and is now home to the Museum's collection of flour sacks...The Gallery Barn, a miniature copy of a large farm barn, was built in the 1920's by Art Hansen as a fish preparation shed...it contains the museum's collection of photographs of Island farming and exhibits related to domestic life. Don't miss the old copper still on the second floor...the Forge (blacksmith shed) is a modern structure built from the wood of an old Island shed to house the Museum's collection of blacksmith tools...The 19th century machinery you see in the Machine Shed represents an important stage in the evolution from pre-industrial, hand farming methods to present-day large scale, mechanized farming." There is also the Grandmother's Garden, Weaving Shed and Barn. Lots here to see and enjoy and an educational experience for your children. Very, very interesting!Highly recommend taking the Washington Ferry with the Cherry Train combo! Worthwhile!

A visit here takes you back in time. Lots of different buildings with lots of antiques from how people lived and farmed long ago. They also had goats and chickens. It's a self guided tour that only asks for donations. If you're on the island it is a must stop.

This place is kind of cool but unless you are a history buff or a farmer who also likes history of farming, you don't need to stay more than 20-30 minutes. It is free but they have a suggested donation of $1 per person.
