As others have written, it definitely is an eery feeling when your car starts rolling backwards uphill. If you really want an experience, try spreading some baby powder on the front of your hood then put your car in neutral and let off the brake. After you roll backwards get out of the car and check out the finger prints from the angels who just pushed your car backwards up the hill.

Shullsburg is a small town. With that said, once a year there is a cheese festival held here. They have hay rides around town that day, bands play music, the local library sells bags of books for a dollar, cheese curds are amazing, cornish pasty is made in one of the eateries, the list kind of goes on and on. Anyway there was this story about "Gravity Hill" and you could sign up to go get a ride out there and experience it. It was just too bizarre until you experience it. I did get it, but it was really hard to believe. I wouldn't do a road trip just to go to Gravity Hill. However, there were so many other things to do that day, this activity just made it all the more complete. Only in Shullsburg WI. Enjoy!

I actually found the location by looking at my geocaching webpage. If it were not for the geocahce located in the same spot it would have been hard to find, there were no markings.

This is a must do in the area. We were amazed to sew how it worked and it does work.

We stopped right by the yellow 25mph sign just as I read to do on the internet and waited a few seconds for gravity to pull us up the little hill... and it did! Very slowly at first, then a little faster until we eventually hit 20mph rolling uphill. So neat, a really weird experience! Easy to find and a really nice ride through Wisconsin's driftless area to get there.

Whether it is “gravity” or optical illusion, this was a unique experience! About a mile outside of Shullsburg, there is a 25 mph sign. Stop, put your car in neutral—watch for traffic—and your car will move backwards, uphill!

I grew up in southern Wisconsin but hadn't heard about gravity hill until 8 years ago. I always thought it would be interesting. I finally made it there today. It it a weird thing to be in the car and swear you are headed down hill but the car is backing uphill while in neutral and no one is touching the gas pedal.

Sometimes the quirkiest listings in State Tourism Websites or Travel Guides just jump out at me. Gravity Hill was one of them. Reading about a place in the road, that when you stop, put your car in Neutral and let off of the brake, your car will travel uphill, sounded like a farce to me. But we were going to be in Monroe which was not to far away and it was free, so all it was going to cost me was a bit of gas and some time. Ok add it to the list.
My wife was more skeptical than I was and not convinced it was worth our time, but we drove out of Monroe and headed towards Shullsburg and County Road U. We stopped at a convenience store to get ice outside of town and my wife asked about Gravity Hill inside. The clerk had never heard of it before, but another patron said it had been a long time since he was there but he remembered it was south of town.
After a few miles south of Shullsburg we saw a large capital GH and a line drawn under the letters painted on the road, no other markings or signs and figured this was it. So I stopped the car, did what it said online and presto the car was moving back up the hill we just came down. My wife freaked. We did it again, same thing. We then turned around and tried it from the other side of the road. This time we went forward instead of backwards. I know there is some sort of explanation and I have heard there are several other places in the USA that one can do this, but if you want a kick or scare or surprise someone, you got to try this.

We must not be smart enough to figure this one out. Not sure it is worth it but it wasn't for us. Maybe we have to try it again, but I'm thinking that it isn't worth the time. Have fun!!
