I visited the John Michael Kohler Arts Center this weekend and was so impressed with the exhibits, the beauty and simplicity of the building, and the friendliness of all the staff I encountered. The gardens were also wonderful and there are lots of peaceful places to sit. I felt very safe visiting during COVID as the museum has great policies in place (limited entry, ability to make reservations online, hand sanitizer in each room, etc) and would recommend this amazing museum to anyone looking for some beautiful and thought-provoking art.

We came to the area specifically to see this museum and its sister museum The Art Preserve. I am glad we made the trip as we were not disappointed in the quality of the art on display. We were very surprised though that so few people were at the museum on a Saturday, although the weather was frigid. The staff member at the front desk highly recommended we check out all the restrooms which are all different and designed by artists. Yes, we felt a bit strange taking photos of toilets, but it was an interesting experience. The grief room at the front of the museum is thoughtfully designed and really touched both my daughter and me. The Sky Hopinka video was very thought provoking and made me reflect on the meaning of life and how we remember those who are no longer with us and their impact on our lives. The area which was dedicated to the folk art of the Zahn family was very interesting. When we were going through the homestead where the Otis Houston exhibit is, I saw a horse inside what appears to have been a dining room. I meant to ask if it was taxidermied or a sculpture.

We just moved to Sheboygan, WI at the end of July. I am an artist so I immediately looked for places in Sheboygan to get involved with the arts. I paid the membership at JMKAC but had not stopped in there until this weekend. I had been there in the past (about 5 years ago) for a ballet recital, but I did not remember how cool it was! It is a fantastic arts center! For a city the size of Sheboygan (approx 55,000 pop) this center exceded mine & my husbands expectations. It is a beautiful building and the exhibits were great. The staff was friendly and there were many families enjoying the artwork when we were there. I am glad that I joined and look forward to many years exploring and enjoying the center!

I enjoyed my time at this museum but I was very disappointed about how sexist the bathrooms are. The men's bathrooms are so much better, really interesting take on delft blue with modern scenes and architecture styles. However, the womens' bathrooms were all about women's clothing. Since all genders are welcomed to take a look, I would encourage the museum to look at the message they are sending to young girls verses young boys.

Charming little art museum. Not so large that you get bored. Part of the collection is in an old mansion that is worth seeing in itself. The bathrooms are amazing. Be sure to check out both the men's and women's bathrooms no matter which sex you are. Amazing tilework and even the toilets (Kohler, of course) are decorated.

We visited the John Michael Kohler Arts Center during the Midsummer Arts Festival. Truly beautiful inside and out. Many wonderful displays and something around every corner. If you are in Sheboygan, you should put this on your short list. There is no fee for admission but a suggested donation is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Certainly worth the cost.

JMKAM is a diamond in the rough. For a city this size, I wouldn't expect this sort of quality art museum. And it isn't your usual boring art museum with pictures on the walls. I like to call it "alternative" art. Some exhibits are even intercative. The exhibits are frequently changing so there is alot of variety. I've seen a giant whale made out of felt, and a whole house covered in glitter and sequins. There is acafe, though I've never eaten at it. The gift shop is fun to peruse and across the way is an art room for kids. Don't forget to check out both bathrooms also. They are an exhibit themselves!

What a treat! Definitely visit this Arts center when you are in Sheboygan. We really enjoyed the work and studio exhibition of Lenore Tawney. Her cloud Labyrinth was very intriguing as well. I'm not sure I've seen an artist's studio recreated as this. We also found the collection of Dr. Charles Smith sculptures very meaningful. Art is definitely healing. Don't miss the restrooms. I don't know about the men's room, but the women's room is so interesting I took photos!
