This place was a bit of serendipity for us and we were lucky to have met a very interesting and competent guide passionate about local history. The Little White Schoolhouse built in 1853 is apparently considered the birthplace of the Republican Party. The interior of the schoolhouse consists of many important artifacts, old school furniture and one can find a lot of information about the antislavery movement and the Republican Party. The markers just outside the building provide a lot of detailed information. This is a recommended stop while in Ripon.

It may be just a small white school house but I learned so much I didn't know about our nation's history. It doesn't matter what political party you profess, this is the place where anti-slavery and the party that supported it were born. This was also the meeting house of the fathers of Ripon, which were amazingly progressive thinkers and doers. What I really enjoyed was the tour. You can read all the information on the walls, but having the history told with passion by an eighth generation Ripon resident was over the top wonderful.

I love this little one-room building that was critical in the formation of the Republican Party. It's too bas that more people don't know about this place or the history behind it. The historical society has a nice little gem here.

Recently 12 men were playing golf near Green Lake, WI and took the opportunity to go to Ripon (about 10 minutes away) to visit The Little White School House. We met with the head docent who was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of this place as well as the history of how we got to have the Republican and Democratic Parties. It was here that the Republican Party as we know it today was founded in 1854 when a small group of Ripon citizens met together to organize and fight against the spread of slavery. They called themselves Republicans and Lincoln was one of their first members. There are lots of interesting pictures and mementos at the school house. Worth a visit if you are nearby. It's a small but well-furnished museum that tells the story of the founding of the Republican Party and the events that surrounded it. It is restored inside and out as a one-room school from the mid-19th century. That alone is worth a visit.

Ripon in the 1850s was a hotbed of radical, rabble-rousing, abolitionism and civil disobedience against slavery. Visitors of all political stripes will find something to interest them here.

One could see it all in an hour or less. If there is a fee, it's a very modest one.

Four of us showed up and were essentially given a private tour by an enthusiastic hostess. Lots of history surrounds Ripon and she did a great job on explaining the context.

Worth a side trip to see a bit of American political history. Birthplace of the GOP in 1854. Having been born 80 miles from Ripon (in Stevens Point) and raised about 60 miles away (in Wisconsin Rapids) I am among many who view the schoolhouse as a haven for authentic members of a once proud and noble political party. This symbol will remain as such long after we have eradicated the foul usurpers who have highjacked the GOP. Remember to vote!

Note: the address is 305 Blackburn Street, not 303, as shown above. Cheers.

Worth a visit when you are in the area. Regardless of your politics, one of the major tenets of this party was to abolish slavery. There is a lot of history that many people are probably not aware of.
